Evening at Texana

The 2009 "Evening of Texana" is slated for 7 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Red River Historical Museum, 301 S. Walnut, in Sherman. The event is open to the public, free of charge, but donations to the museum will be appreciated.

Three readings of works by Texas authors will be featured. The readings are not suitable for children.

For his reading, John West has chosen from the latest collection of short stories by Robert Garner McBrearty, Episode. McBrearty has once again created stories filed with pathos and humor. "The Bike" tells the story of a married couple who have reached a point where their paths diverge, one finally moving ahead and the other unable to escape from the shadow caused by their child's death.

Ginger Nye will be reading "Trip in a Summer Dress," by Annette Sandford. The short story was published in Sandford's book entitled Lasting Attachments, and is one in the Southwest Life and Letters series. Much lies below the surface in a Sanford story, and while the small-town and rural folks who people her world may seem simple, their buried lives are as quirky, complex, and sometimes shocking, as those of the most world-weary city dwellers.

Margie Morris will read "Walnut Grove." Originally published in 1964, it captures the challenges of growing up in a pioneer town in West Texas through the eyes of young John Carlile. When Grandma comes from East Texas just before Christmas, she brings a wisdom beyond coping with failed crops and endless chores, and John's life is forever changed by her interest in him and the conversations they share. The author, Jane Gilmore Rushing is a West Texas native and former professor at Texas Tech.
