Tennis Cats finish strong
HERALD DEMOCRAT
FLOWER MOUND -- Sherman's tennis team had several strong efforts against largely Class 5A competition on Friday and Saturday in opening their 2010 spring schedule at the Flower Mound Marcus Marauder Invitational.
In boys A singles, Sherman's Cameron Ramsey bounced back from a first-round loss to win the consolation championship final, defeating Corey Morin of Colleyville Heritage 8-5. Along the way, Ramsey beat Mason Eberhart of Southlake Carroll, 8-3, and Jon Wong of Plano East, 8-6.
Bearcat Damian Shelton captured third place in boys B singles, beating Ryan Nielsen of Flower Mound, 6-0, 4-6, 15-13 in a super tiebreak. Shelton opened by beating Marcus' Joe Ru, 6-1, 6-2, and John Wooldridge of Southlake Carroll, 6-0, 6-4 before a semifinal loss to Zach Bond of Keller, 3-6, 6-4, 10-7
In the Boys B doubles draw, Griffin Papaila and Thomas Dickson won the consolation championship after dropping their first match to Talley-Neufang of Southlake 6-3, 2-6, 10-7. They bounced back by beating Choi-Barwinkle of Richland, 8-2, Graham-Shafaanek of Lovejoy, 8-1, and Chafee-Floyd of Frisco Wakeland, 8-2, in the consolation finals.
Sherman's mixed doubles teams both finished second in the consolation brackets. In the A bracket, Jeremy Pimm and Emily Gilvar lost to Prindiville-Priestley of Lovjoy 8-6 in finals, while in B, freshmen Hunter Marze and Kaylee Coffman lost to Cherry-Sanders of Colleyville, 8-6.
"That last group, two freshmen going up against 5A schools, did pretty good," said Sherman tennis coach Rodney Pilcher. "For our first tournament of the spring, we didn't get to practice a lot this week because of the weather, but we did pretty good."
The Bearcats and Lady Cats return to the courts on Friday and Saturday at the Coppell Valentine Invitational.
