LIVE BLOG -- Denison vs. Kennedale

Hope springs eternal when a season is yet to start. Some old faces, some new faces and a dynamic of a team ready to tackle the 10 opponents facing them between now and the playoffs.

Everyone is undefeated (unless your team lost in a Thursday night special) and dreams of district titles, playoffs and state titles seem rational to hold.

Kicking things off for the Denison Yellow Jackets in 2010 is Kennedale, a 3A program that loves to run, run, run the football. Follow all the action here starting at 7:30 p.m.

Thank you and the "Dawg Pound" for being willing to encouraage our other Jacket fans on the east side to show GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP to our visitors!! It might be a big task, but the City of Denison should truly appreciate you!! We just really need that fantastic CRAZY-LOUD JACKET SPIRIT that you and the great student section have been displaying. Keep it up-- maybe it will spread over to the "reserved" side.

I agree with yr comment about other folks yelling out cody white being stupid. I know for a fact that it hurts his lil kids and wife that might hear that, so please lets not down the coaches even though some of us may not agree with what they might be doing. I do not sit over on the west side I am a member of the jacket Dawg Pound and we sit over on the east side next to the visitors section and we are going to help Jacket Master in tryin to like controling people who yell out derogotory comments to the visitors cause I would like people from out of town to leave or city knowing that we show good sportsmanship

AMEN!! GREAT POST! There is an old, obnoxious fan who sits in front of me and is directly behind our bench. He screams horrible things at the players and coaches. I can hardly wait for the day when one of the coaches turns around and has a little "talk" with him to put him in his place-- which should be outside the stadium!

I have been sitting in the same seat in the same section for over ten years now...I have to comment on the amount of negative comments that were singling people out. I sit near the coach's wives and all their kids and I was personally offended when several of the "fans" were calling Coach White stupid and and calling individual players names and referring to them as idiots. I am a true fan I support win or lose. I understand the amount of time that goes into coaching a high school football team and playing on a high school football team. All of these arm-chair coaches can do that, coach em up from the stands if that's what makes you feel good just don't single people out and call them names...one of Coach White's daughters was really upset by the comments and to her that is DAD not COACH so watch the comments that are coming out of your mouth. They signed up to be coaches not to have their families have to defend their charachter in the stands. I do not know how the wives even sit in the stands...I wouldn't, I would have a hard time keeping my mouth shut and telling these people that they are the idiots. Just support the team if you have a critique it doesn't mean you should bash that person's credability because you don't like something they are doing on a field!!! These are men with families (that are missing their family time to coach these kids) and these are boys that are working incredibly hard to maintain the level of play that has been here the past couple of years. I will be taking a stand this Friday night in support of the coaches and their families since no one else will...I hope you will too.

Good Grief. So many people are attacking each other on here that I think you misunderstood what I was saying. The "Give me a break" was for the fans on the home side who aren't there to cheer or watch the game! Please understand that I was in NO WAY accusing the Dawg Pound of poor sportsmanship. I said, and repeat, that I LOVE YOUR SPRIT AND SUPPORT OF OUR JACKETS! I simply asked your help in quieting those others on the east side who are "crossing the line" and becoming rude and obnoxious to the visitors! NOT YOU GUYS! I had the honor of sitting next to the Pound at a couple of playoff games and I LOVED IT-- You are my kind of fans! I guess the problem is rare these days where home fans, band, and students sit on the side with the opponents! Munson is just so small and our fanbase is so big that it's a necessity. But it can make for trouble. The visitors for JV and Freshmen games sit on the home side with us and it can get testy-- usually just all in fun, but it was almost a fracas one time with Rider fans. I did hear, however, that some of our students did cross the line last week. (I think it's worse when we play teams who go down when they run out and celebrate in front of our student section.) The kids need to understand that what they do is a reflection on the whole community of Denison. This isn't ONLY Denison students who misbehave. I could tell you some things Sherman kids did that would curl you hair. I'm glad that you had a chance to wish Kennedale well on the season. That was gracious of the Dawg Pound. Keep up that Jacket Spirit!!

I'm "just wondering" if you intended to post that last one on the Sherman blog? I don't think that you find too many Kinne supporters "here," (on a Denison blog) or people jumping ship "over there" in Sherman! Even those who ABHORED the HC last summer are on sailing on the SS Kinne now in Sher-town. By the way, I thought your post on the life boats was pretty funny.

The Dawg Pound sits next to the student section on the East side of Munson.. The students always' Dog The visiting teams.
If we had a stadium large enough to support 500 more folks, This would be a Non-Factor. I can say that everyone including the Dawg Pound let the officials have it on bad calls.
Being in close proximity to the other team allows the visiting team to hear the cheers for the Jackets by our fans and it freaks em out!
The only other incidents happen when The Battle of the Axe is at Munson. Sherman Fans elbow to elbow with Jacket Fans. The only thing that propagates from that is who is the Loudest until the the loser concides.
The Dawg Pound is a great bunch of fans that have started this tradition in 1984. We have been on TV, Radio, Newspaper interviews and Leaders of Spirit for the Jackets for decades.
In my earlier writing i'm sure you noticed that after the game on Friday, Wewished the Kennedale Coaches and players good luck for the rest of the season.
Showing some class is better than being an a.
We want The Jacket Dawg Pound to become a recognized part of Jacket Football Tradition. Being rude or classless has never been part of this group. In some isolated cases Taking up for our team has!.
The Student Section and the Dawg Pound are the best fans in Texomaland, Hands Down!!.

I know that you won't be able to post this, as it apparently houses a "forbidden" topic. We just love this blog at our house, Jason! We have about five family members (who have strong opinions, and rarely agree) who share a computer and love to participate in these discussions. Thanks for providing a place for many fans to share thoughts. MY question is this: I know that my sons have posted several things that happen to mention Thor Long's desire to move to Denison 2 years ago. Any post stating that seems to be forbidden and is BLOCKED. Since that was a subject covered by the Herald Democrat, I just can't comprehend why it is not printed! Wish that I understood. Anyway, you guys are doing a GREAT job. Thank you so much!

Yes, MANY of the so-called "fans" in Section B left early. The strange thing is that they do that whether we win or lose. It's probably because they just don't care about football...These people are what I was talking about earlier. I know that the few of us who want to yell and stand really irritate them enormously!! You, as a passionate fan will not believe this.... We have people who read novels and work on laptops that sit near us. Now, why take up a seat at the game when you can do that at home? Some just like to "see and be seen" at the "social" event. Give me a break! Jacket Master, I have to ask you a favor. If you are one of the "dog pound" who sits on the east side, I truly admire your spirit and support of the Jackets! I hope that you can help with a difficult situation. Over the past few years, I have read repeated posts by fans of our opponents who say that Denison fans on that side treat them with little respect and even heckle their coaches and teams! This makes Denison look SO BAD to those outside of our community. If you see ANYONE doing this, could you please contact the officers on that side and have them removed? There is NO EXCUSE for this behavior! It doesn't help the team, and just makes us look like thugs. There has to be a middle ground between the dead fans and the boisterous ones where we can support our team with class. Thank you!

Someone posting under the 'just wondering' name had a lot of negative comments on Sherman Coaching this year. Deep down they wanted Sherman to fail miserably in their first game. Well, that didn't happen so now they are over here trying to stir things up. A classic message board troll. It is best just to ignore them.

The statement i made about Denison fans leaving the game early is an old ongoing thing thats been at Munson stadium for decades. The center section of fans at Munson have always been the fair weather fans. Younger people are starting to wedge into this section due to old folks giving up on season tickets. I know that you aren't from Dennison or, You would know this. Believe me, Everyone in other sections of Munson Stadium stayed put for the entire game and will remain through the season. It's well known in Denison that most of Section B at Munson sit on their hands.

Actually, Mr. Hobbs (you are most likely a coach) only the "O" line coaches were mentioned. Are you one of those?? It's obvious that you are very offended by the comments about coaching on this blog. As far as I know this is still a fairly free country and we may say what we like even if it's hard to hear. Sometimes our critics can help us better than those who pat us on the back. Maybe you should think about what was said just to be sure it isn't so. You might learn something. Right??

Yellow Jacket Spirit On Life Support : 8/30/2010
I'm glad that several of you have had comments about our LACKLUSTER JACKETS FANS! Every year on several sites we talk about this, but nothing changes. I was so extremely PROUD OF OUR STUDENT SECTION. The last few years THEIR SPIRIT HAS BEEN GREAT-- standing, yelling, and staying till the bitter end, win or lose!! Sections A & C on the homeside are pretty darn lively too. Now...... let's move on to the vast, sedentary, silent, RESERVED Section B-- which just so happens to be directly behind the Jacket bench! Except for a handful of brave souls, these people will not stand for kickoffs, touchdowns (wish we'd had one), defensive stands, the school song ... or anything. Let me tell you, they will rudely scream at you to "SIT DOWN" if you do try to stand in support of the team. Look, I don't want to block anyone's view of the game. I've been told that there are many elderly in the crowd (stating the obvious). BUT, our fans need to realize that they can be a REAL FACTOR in a game, especially if your team needs firing up and encouragement. This last game is the first time since the Marty Criswell days that I've seen the crowd ignore the football players practically BEGGING them get on their feet and get into the game! It was pathetic. It has to change. Our players and coaches deserve better fan support than Section B is giving them!!!

Calling All Jacket Fans : 8/30/2010
Compassion and Emotions have erupted on here. Including myself. The one common denominator is we all hated what we saw the other night. When you expect to win and get 'Man Handled'. Well, It's just a hard pill to swallow. We all just Love the Jackets So much!.Year in year out. Also, I don't care if the Cat fans come on here to gloat. It's been a long time coming for them, A Long Time!. I agree that the culprit during the game was Timing. It just was'nt there. If Kennedale loses to another 3A team, I'm gonna die. I saw a State Qualifier in that bunch. After the game, We did wish the Head coach of Kennedale The best of luck this year. I was dissapointed in the Denison Fans that sit in the old center section of Munson Stadium. Man, They stormed out of there like people looking for a Life Boat on the Titanic. The Kennedale Players, Fans and Coaches were very kind to the East Munson fans. Good Luck to em..Good Luck to the Jackets Friday night. Frisco just might be walking into a Angry Bee Hive!. I hope so, We shall see (In Person)!!

Whatever.. : 8/30/2010
We'll just leave this discussion at, everyone could have done a better job. From players to coaches. Offense to Defense. No one looked prepared. It was a sloppy outing and it's something that I don't think we'll see happen again this week. I have VERY little doubt that Kennedale is a better team than we are right now. I thought that coming in. I think thats pretty obvious. I just happen to think that they aren't 34-3 better than we are and that a much better effort could have been produced. I doubt anyone would disagree with that. I truly believe that, as much as this game stung at the time, that it will end up doing some good. I always hesitate saying that anything good comes from a loss. Perhaps in this case, it's not the worst thing. Maybe it motivates them in moving forward, not to have that happen again. If not, this will become the norm. I still think that the team will be okay and I believe in the players and coaching staff. They just have to get some things straitened out.

I don't think too many Jacket fans are jumping ship, so that can't be it! Oh, I just heard what those RESCUE BOATS are for.... Remember that some poor Kinne assistant had to drag Sherman's last district trophy to every practice and game last year for inspiration? It was reported that it was ditched out of the Bearcat bus window as they were leaving Munson last year... after losing yet ANOTHER BATTLE OF THE AXE!! We are just doing the neighborly thing and trying to find and rescue the old, ancient relic for you.

Mr. Hobbs- : 8/30/2010
The majority of us are subjected almost daily to critiques of the job we are doing; it just isn't a public forum! Unfortunately, coaches KNOW that this is part of the job when they decide to coach! Most of them aren't concerned with what the public has to say, and it just rolls right off their backs. I think it's their wives and kids that are most effected by it. Did you read all of the horribly negative comments about Sherman's coach this summer on this site? In the Sherman preview on KXII, he essentially said that they weren't concerned about what folks in the community had to say, they just cared about the kids. You notice that the negativity died down when the Cats started WINNING-- That is the key. Wait till the end of the season and they'll be calling him a football genius...

: 8/30/2010
Read more carefully J backer. I simply implied that it was the entire offense misfiring and not just the O-line. That is why I said the QB and RB as well as the O-line. Again...as well as the O-line. I just don't like people that do not understand the game always looking for someone to blame. There is a novel idea...the guys we are trying to block might be good too. It's funny how if our defense stops someone then we are good...but if someones defense stops us, we didn't block. If people do not know what they are talking about then they should keep quiet. Sometimes other teams are just better than us. There is no one to blame. Just watch them and cheer them on. Several people started leaving from the reserved section after the last touchdown.

rockne

Rockne : 8/30/2010
Yeah, it's funny how it's okay for you to talk about the kids though....Strange. First off, who doesn't know what they are talking about? Before you spout off about me not knowing what I'm talking about, you may want to make sure that you do. You sound a little defensive and like it gets to you personally, which makes me which makes me wonder just how close you are to the team.....Listen, I played football here for several years and I'm not just some random, ignorant fan that hasn't a clue what they are talking about. I've been in and around the game for 25 years and I can almost promise I know just as much or more than yourself. Secondly, you may want to go back and read my post. Most of what I said has to do with the coaches. After all, I believe a lot of this falls on them. The coaches acting disgusted with the line and walking away from them (which by the way, means HE was also disappointed with them, not just us)doesn't o anyone any good. Thirdly, can you say that they looked prepared Friday night? I'd venture to guess most would agree that they didn't! While I did make some remarks about the Offensive line being offensive, I stand by what I said. There was not one KNOWLEDGEABLE fan, coach or publication this year, that didn't say that the O line was supposed to be the strength of this team. Not one! Ummm, even the head coach said this! So, what did you see Friday night? Did you see leadership from the offensive line? What I saw (looking directly at the O line), was them being pushed back for the most part and not maintaining their blocks. I was staring right at it! Now, they were playing a very good defensive team on Friday night....and they better get used to it! There are defenses MUCH better than Kennedale on the way. Glades Central's defense has already been called "one of the best defenses in the country" by a few writers. I'm also not saying that the QB or RB's weren't off here and there and that there weren't some timing issues. I mean, there are timing issues when the line doesn't block and defenses come in to the backfield early!!I hate to be captain obvious with that one, but it's true! I'm not saying that ALWAYS happened, but it was a factor. Other's weren't great either, it's the first game. But, if what you saw was that the O line was doing it's job, then you are the one that is in deep denial or is ignorant. How anyone can get on here and say that the O line wasn't disappointing or that they were as productive and prepared as they needed to be, is just a joke. Anyone that knows football well, knows that offenses, in general, go how the O line goes and if a team can't establish the run, all else is pretty much downhill hill and struggles from there! Well, most people knew that I thought. I'd don't think anyone "knowledgeable" would disagree with that. I believe I even said that the offense will get it worked out and come around, did I not? I honestly think they will. I think that we have some really good offensive lineman. I never said that the players we have on our O line are terrible, did I? NO. They were, however not good on Friday night. If you think they were, go ask around a little and see how many agree with you. I actually happen to think that the O line is still the strength of this team. Maybe, that's why they need to be much more solid and productive. I believe that, this year in particular, they are the most important unit on this team. They need to be proud of that and act like it. If they (or you) can't handle the pressure and a little critism then maybe they shouldn't be on the field or maybe that's part of the problem. I don't know what to tell you. Fact of the matter remains, they are the strength of this team and I, as well as many others, didn't see strength from this unit. Sorry, but I'm not wrong here. I have always been a loyal and faithful and proud Yellowjacket student, alum, player and fan! No one has EVER questioned that and they aren't about to start now. Having said that, I'm not a "casual" fan that just believes all is fine, when there may be a problem. I can be a fan and be realistic. Which, possibly you are struggling with. I call things them as I see them and I don't let my love for DHS athletics, blind me to what's obvious. I've never said that we don't have good athletes on every unit. We do. We always have. What I say is that Friday, there were issues. Pretty big issues, that need to be addressed. Things just don't become rosey and okay. Issues have to be seen and dealt with. As I said, I think they will be dealt with and I think much more focus will be put into our offense this week and will be much more productive. As for last week, you can say what you want in your courageous defense of the offensive line, but they didn't play well, at all. It's all right there on film and in the stats. That's not to say all other units played well.

You would think that with all these all star daddy coaches in the Sher-Den area neither team would ever lose a freakin' game. If all of you know so much get a degree and apply for a coaching job. Im sure Cody White would gladly hire you if you could come show him a better way to do things. And by the way saying " man that danged ole line needs to block somebody dude" isnt a solution. The DHS coaching staff doesnt come to you job and pretend to have a better way to do it....so return the favor.

Jackets2010 : 8/29/2010
How can anyone be on here saying anything negative about the players in anyway. When you pick out a particular unit and talk about them playing poorly remember you are talking badly about children. With that said, when you are completely ignorant about football you should say nothing. People who do not understand the game but think they do always blame the offensive line when the ball doesn't move. That is because you do not know all of the aspects of the offense. Oftentimes a team does not move the ball because of the timing in the backfield. The quarterback or the runningback often make the wrong read, don't find the holes, react tool slowly, or sometimes they are too impatient and do not let things develop. But every idiot out there screams at the O-line or the coaches for calling the "wrong plays". I watched this game and the O-line needs work just as all positions do at this point, I can assure you that the offense's inability to move the ball had as much to do with the QB and the running back as the O-line. The O-line only has one full time returning starter out there. Many new kids out there and many timing and "reads" issues. If you want to be a fan keep your mouth shut about any of the kids and stay in the bleachers until the end of the game, even when we are losing.

Thank you Jackets 2010 and DHS Booster...you said most of what I have to say. I am no way ashamed or in any way giving up on this year's Jackets. IF you were really fans you would realize that encouragement for this year's team is way more important that all the praise heaped upon last year's team. PeeWee Herman could have won with last year's group. Now the real coaching begins and the real supporters WILL show up. I am far more ashamed of the fair weather comments on this blog and at the game last Friday than I could ever be of our guys. I WANT to see Coach Rozell on the field....we need his FIRE!! Others who could get their act together and TRY to coach; the "O" line coaches. Come on you weenies. Where were you when the guys came off the field? Standing far away with your arms folded pretending not to know the players that you are supposed to be coaching. Truth is can you really coach? Shades of Coach Davis in his last two years....completely uninvolved. Coaches should be coaching and players will rise to the occasion. As I said, now the real coaching begins and I think this year will show which coaches have the real stuff. Please do not EVER AGAIN let me hear that the players or coaches are scared of the team we are about to play. This was on the pre-game show. Pitiful, contagious and embarrasing!! I will be looking for this group to keep working and believe in themselves. I do. I haven't given up!

There sure is a lot of nasty attitude from both Denison and Sherman fans. Yes you are big rivals but you should take pride that each team brings out the best in each other on the field. As a Bearcat fan I was taunted by Denison fans last year for cheering on the Bearcats when they fell behind and I am sure some Sherman fans are just as guilty of such behavior. But what is gained from being mean spirited? Other than the big game why not show a little support for each other and realize that when the other team does good it just brings more pride to Texomaland football. We don't have to hold hands and sing Kum Ba Yah but a little civility would be nice.

I recall in 2007 we had many sophomores (9?) on varsity and went 4-6. I had many coaches tell me that Jordan Taylor was a really fine athelete, but to my eye, I just didn't see it when he was sharing time with Eric Chavez. It wan't until the end of the year in Denison's comeback against Sherman in the Battle of the Axe that I really witnessed his great talent! He suddenly burst on the scene and willed that win. I remember the Sherman announcers saying, "ice water in his veins." He was SPECTACULAR! My point here is that Denison's all-time passing leader and QB of the team that set so many new records DID NOT look that way from his first varsity outing.
This new swarm of Jackets has so many who have never played varsity ball under the Friday Night Lights! It's my belief that we have "diamonds in the rough" that WILL get better as they go along.... just like Jordan Taylor, Jimmay Mundine and the rest did. I know that the coaches will maximize the potential of this team, and that is all we can ask. Work hard, Jackets. NEVER give up! I have the faith that you have the HEART and the will to do your best to represent Denison. We support you!

Very Dissapointed : 8/28/2010
My opinion we are suppose to be a winning team. This is not normal at all. I feel that they are going about it the wrong way. There is a lot of talent out there and I am tired of everyone saying it is a new team. These boys have been playing together ever since 7th grade and they know how to play football. My thing is they are not in the positions that they need to be. My lord Stacy Golstn is a good player but he can not do everything. They are going to wear him out and they are going to be looking very stupid when either he throw in the towel because a person can only handle so much. This is suppose to be a team and instead of the coach having some since he should have been trying to put some of the ones that they were on the side lines anxious to play that really has speed such as Dre Butler to go ahead and see what he could do. Which everyone knows that he has speed because he showed that last year. I feel in my opinion that the coach needs to move some ofthe players aroud in practice to see what they can do this Friday. If they could do a little alternating like letting Dre Butler and Elijah Butler alternate at times and put Stacy Golston back at linebacker to see how that works. I feel that Tylor Mclaren should get back in as quarterback because Jordan Watson is not ready for the challenge. We want to win and it does not make any since why you have players with all of that talent that they do not know where to put them.

Come off the ledge : 8/28/2010
Okay. Yes, that was a really tough one and Kennedale is very good. Matter of fact, even ranked 15th in 3A, I'd say that they are still underrated. As bad as the score looks (and it wasn't a good night by any means), I still can find a few positives and believe that they will get much better as they get adjusted to Varsity play and even by next week. Most of the D players were seeing their first Varsity action last night against the Wing T offense. Facing that alone is difficult enough, then you add that was their first game and that they were facing a VERY talented offense. It just made for a tough time all around, but the offense did them NO favors! The defense was out on the field all night long, because the offense couldn't get a first down.
As for the offense, I was really disappointed, but I still think now, that they realize how much work they have to do, the coaches will focus some extra effort and time on the offense and it'll come around. The offensive line was just that, offensive. This was the one unit that was supposed to be realiable, returned some starters and could provide some leadership for the team. In a position of rebuilding, (not reloading, obviously)like Denison is in this year, you need to be able to have a little consistency in something. That was supposed to be our run game, anchored by the offensive line. The O line couldn't move a twin mattress. They looked totally unprepared, along with the rest of the offensive unit. I believe that it starts at the base of the offense and that's the offensive line. They all looked completely surprised that they even had a game Friday night! What's with the coaches not even being around their group of players when they came off the field?? A few of them just decided they would wander aimlessly somewhere downfield, with their arms crossed staring into the night sky. I mean, get in your players faces, go scream at them, get them fired up, go teach them! Do anything but act like you don't care what just happened on the field with your unit and that you are thoroughly disgusted (because believe me, we were) or that you have nothing to say to them.
The whole sideline was dead and completely silent. This team has GOT to find a few emotional learders. I made mention and comparisons before that there was a chance that this team could be like the 2005 team. I take that back for now, because I don't see that right now. It's still early and I guess that could change, but what the 2005 team had a lot of was vocal emotional leaders with heart. The whole team had it! This team still has a lot of talent, believe it or not. It's just time to see if some coaches can earn their paycheck and last night I didn't see that. I think that we have good coaches and here is their time to shine and show off what they can truly do, as coaches . So, it pretty much begins now. It's easy to win and look good as coaches when you have amazing athletes, but what about when the amazing talent is gone and the very foundation and core of coaching comes back into play? What can you do when it takes great coaching to win games? I believe in our coaches. I honestly do and this is a tremendous challenge for them. I wish them all the best! We shall see.....

To jacket disaster and all those people in the stands last night who constantly were downing the jackets. Wow.. give these kids a break.. the first game and you want to say these kids are a disaster.. when you return only 3 starters and you think you are going to walk out on the field and everything is going to click.. i think you don't know much about football or life in general if you are that way after one game. And quess what , maybe the 2010 Jackets won't be as successful, won't win many games, or win any games , well, quess what, life will go on..These are good kids with good attitudes and do want to win.. Believe me, i want to see them win as bad as anyone else in the stands and i have a son out there that is on the field and I know how bad he wants it, but sometimes it doesn't happen. People need to quit looking at what happen the last 2 years. This is a new year. Support the kids , win or lose. These kids will come around!!!!!!

Ouch!!!, That Stung! : 8/28/2010
34-3. What a slap in the face.. Reality Bites..Was it The Wing T Offense? or was it total domination by Kennadale?. Denison better find a better QB. This isn't going to work with a Sophamore at the helm. Can't run, Can't pass.. Oh My!!! We scored 96 TDs last year. It might be 96 TDs scored on us this year. The Defense did get better as the game went on But, The Offense spit and sputtered and looked Anemic. No signs of life or motivation. The sideline was quiet and somber. And Please, Stop the 'Mercat Cat Manor'(The Offense Looking at the Coaches before each play). It served no positive purpose. Just runs the clock out.. Growing pains for sure..Good Luck, Coach White Short season ahead..
