Game Recap -- Denison vs. Kennedale

We take you now to a scene earlier overheard at Munson Stadium, as a new era of Yellow Jackets began their season against Kennedale. (Names have been changed to protect the innocent).

Costello: Well you know I've never met the guys. So you'll have to tell me their names, and then I'll know who's playing on the team.

Abbott: I say Who's the quarterback, What's the tailback, I Don't Know's the receiver.

Costello: And you don't know the fellows' names?

Abbott: Well I should.

Costello: Well then who's the quarterback?

Abbott: Yes.

Costello: I mean the fellow's name.

Abbott: Who.

Costello: The quarterback.

Abbott: Who.

Costello: The guy who runs the offense.

Abbott: Who.

Costello: The guy playing...

Abbott: Who is the quarterback!

Costello: All I'm trying to find out is what's the guy's name at quarterback.

Abbott: No. What is the tailback.

Costello: I'm not asking you who's the tailback.

Abbott: Who's the quarterback.

Costello: If I mentioned the wideout's name, who did I say is playing receiver?

Abbott: No. Who's playing quarterback.

Costello: What's at quarterback?

Abbott: What's the tailback.

Costello: I don't know.

Abbott: He's at receiver.

Costello: Look, you gotta secondary?

Abbott: Sure.

Costello: The cornerback's name?

Abbott: Why.

Costello: I just thought I'd ask you.

Abbott: Well, I just thought I'd tell ya.

Costello: Then tell me who's playing cornerback.

Abbott: Who's playing quarterback.

Costello: I'm not... stay out of the offense! I want to know what's the guy's name at cornerback?

Abbott: No, What is the tailback.

Costello: I'm not asking you who's at tailback.

Abbott: Who's at quarterback!

Costello: The cornerback's name?

Abbott: Why.

Costello: Because!

Abbott: Oh, he's the linebacker.

It was over when -- Denison had its second possession inside the Kennedale 25-yard line but had to settle for a 34-yard field goal from Dalton Hestand instead of a touchdown that would have made it a 20-7 game.

It was really over when -- Stephen Rivera scored on an eight-yard touchdown run with 9:24 left in the game. Kennedale did what the Jackets couldn't -- take advantage of a special teams play (in this case a 59-yard punt return from Ceasar Robles) and punch it in the end zone.

Player of the Game -- Kennedale running back Bo Burgess. The senior had 194 yards and two touchdowns on just 13 carries and both scores (39 and 44 yards) were monster runs to the outside.

Play of the Game -- Here's the tone-setter. Six plays into its opening drive, Kennedale was facing second and 18 at mid-field. Burgess took a toss around the end and gained 23 as the Wildcats kept on running their way to a lead they never gave back.

The good -- No turnovers on offense. The closest thing to one was when Elijah Butler dropped the ball after taking a hand-off but he scooped it up quickly. Minus the big punt return and the 39-yard FG miss, special teams had a very good night. Rian Conrad averaged 37.2 yards on his punts, including one that scooted out of bounds at the one-yard line. Gage Mrozinski recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half and Tim Bolen stopped a fake on an extra point attempt.

The bad -- The offense couldn't get anything going. Denison had nine possessions and didn't gain more than one first down on eight of them. The final one of the night produced two. And the Jackets gained fewer yards in the second half than the first. The two cracks inside the Kennedale 25-yard line and only three points taken away hurt any potential comeback chance. Jordan Watson was shaky in the passing game, overthrowing the end zone twice and completing 4-of-10 attempts for just three yards. Defensively the Jackets allowed more than 400 yards rushing but to be fair, it's a rare offense run these days and not an easy thing to prepare for. Denison won't see the Wing-T again this season so to judge them on numbers alone isn't entirely fair. However, Kennedale gained the edge very easily in picking up huge chunks of yardage. The biggest blow was that the Wildcats were pinned at their one-yard line and marched down the field in 10 plays.

District lookahead -- Here's how the other teams in 13-4A fared in their opening contests. Sherman and Texas High were the only two teams to win. Sherman beat The Colony, 50-27, behind five touchdown passes from Thor Long and Texas High nipped Vidor, 48-41, in double overtime. Sulphur Springs hung with fifth-ranked Denton Ryan but fell, 28-14, and Mesquite Poteet topped Royse City, 40-19. Greenville suffered a 31-10 loss to one of Denison's future opponents, Little Elm, while Mount Pleasant lost to Henderson, 47-19. If you told me Denison would have scored the fewest points out of the district seven, I wouldn't have believed it, even with eight new starters on that side of the ball.

Stinging stats of the week -- It was the first loss in four openers under Cody White...Denison had gone 49 games scoring at least 10 points, dating back to a 20-7 loss to Wichita Falls Rider in 2005...The last time Denison scored only three points was against LaMarque in the 1996 state championship game, ironically by the same 34-3 score...There were so many firsts in this game for several players -- Jordan Watson threw and completed his first varsity passes while Stacy Golston had his first varsity carries on offense and Hayden Chapman, Jon Cazzelle and Golston all had catches for the first time...Kennedale picked up 21 first downs to Denison's five. The Wildcats threw only six passes, completing one for 15 yards...Jon Cazzelle led the Jackets with 11 tackles (11 solo) while Dylan House added nine tackles (four solo) and Tim Bolen had seven tackles (three solo).
