Denison's a tourney title town
The Denison baseball and softball teams continued their strong starts to the season over the weekend with a pair of tournament titles.
After winning the Little Elm Tournament two weekends ago, the Lady Jackets captured the Howe Tournament crown to improve to 12-4 entering district play and have won 10 of the last 11. Last year the softball team finished 14-20 after winning only one district game but there is much more optimism going into 9-4A play.
Head coach Ashli Wigington had some questions about her lineup and defensive alignment going into the season but things have worked out nicely in both regards. After losing three-of-four at the Whitesboro Tournament, which ironically was the crown the Lady Jackets were trying to defend, the team has lost only once -- a 2-1 loss to Sam Rayburn to open the Howe Tournament, one they avenged with a 7-3 win in the title game. The double-play combo of Danna Neasbitt and Ashley Craig have been providing some offensive production while freshman Kelsey Langford has been strong in the circle with a pair of no-hitters and three one-hitters already this season and at the plate, leading the team with extra-base hits.
On the baseball side, the Jackets took home the H.B. Kernoble title in Dallas after earning the third place trophy at the Bryan Adams Tournament the week prior. Denison is 6-2 on the season, having won six of seven after a season-opening loss to Lake Dallas. Under new head coach Barry Hughes the Jackets are gaining some confidence after winning only five games last season. Denison is supposed to play one district game before hosting the Ty Comstock Classic later this week but hopefully the weather won't disrupt the latest hot streak.
Jordan Taylor has had two back-to-back great tournaments at the plate and the lineup has been producing throughout. Nick Buckner came through with the bat in the title came against North Dallas while Robert Rosser and Tyler Jennings have chipped in as well.
Although the pitching has been by committee, Buckner and Rosser look like the two starters the Jackets will go with once district gets into a Tuesday-Friday rotation.

RE: Denison Athletics : 3/17/2010
I agree with you 100%. Perhaps it is just peaking from bad leadership in the past. It has only been 1 year since AD's have changed. It is well known that football was the only thing the past AD cared about. Other sports were never given the support they needed. In my opinion(perhaps i'm way off base) coaches get greedy for the current year and don't think about the future years. When a group of kids play together for years they build cohesion. At the High School level they are separated(freshman and sophomore's to varsity)then they end up sitting the bench, playing with people they don't know. Cohesion is lost and it all becomes individualized. Another thought is this; playing only 1st string doesn't help others get better(starting at middle school). When a starter is hurt no one has the experience to take their place(they've been sitting the bench all time). And of course the coaches come into play. It's a fact of life that coaches play kids based on parents. It happens in every town in every state. Why would an athlete want to stay in sports when they know the coaches are going to play their friends kids. Some of the best athletes quit in high school because of this. That being said i think Coach White is doing a fantastic job. It will just take some time to come full circle again. Long post but i've been associated with Denison sports for 35 years. I think i know something about the problems.
Love the Jackets

Perhaps this isn't the forum to discuss this, but I feel that it needs to be said. Other than football and the most recent basketball team (and improvement in soccer and swimming) almost every sport in Denison has fallen into oblivion. Most often, you hear that our past AD is to blame. Others say that there has been a "drought in talent," or "drought in interest," or lack of parental involvement. Some people say that our fall is the result of other district teams having more money to put into athletic programs and facilities. It's for sure that "success breeds success" in terms of expectations, confidence, and keeping more kids in sports. Winning track, tennis, volleyball, softball, baseball.... all things that Denison was know and respected for a few years back. What has happened? Any speculation? Personally,I think that the disconnect is starting at the middle school level. Hopefully, Athletic Director Cody White will find the answer to our dilemma. I wish him well!!!

Coach Hughes : 3/12/2010
We love our new coach!!!!! I hope Denison ISD has enough sense to keep him around for a very long time to come. He loves what he is doing, it shows and he CARES about coaching these young guys to get getter and to believe in themselves. Unfortunatley, my son only has the privilege of having him this year. But the time he does have him will certainly be a help to his future in baseball. We just wished he'd been here the last three years. Denison Baseball has an excellent future with this coach running the program. Will certainly be watching what comes next!!!

Coach Hughes : 3/10/2010
Was on the staff last season as an assistant but has 18 years of experience as a head coach with stops at Prosper, Mineola, Commerce, Texas High and Savoy.
He has a 349-149 career record, including a 35-14 mark in the playoffs -- which is bolstered by winning the 1984 state title at Prosper.
