Denison boys soccer wrapup
The Denison boys soccer team struggled in district play for a second straight season with a search for offense that lasted all season.
Junior Jeremy Camp scored a team-leading 12 goals during the Yellow Jackets' 4-13-2 season (0-8-2 in 17-4A play). Denison was never able to find a second scoring option -- eight other players besides Camp scored a goal but only Collin Anderson and Joseph Hefner were able to score more than that, and they only had two apiece.
Defensively it didn't help that starting keeper Beau Hester was injured right at the start of district play and was replaced by a freshman, Kaleb Rice, who made his first varsity start against Sherman in the second 17-4A contest.
But Rice got better as district play went on and the Jackets finished off the season with a 2-1 shootout victory over first-place Little Elm, a team that had beaten them, 7-0, in the first meeting.
Denison graduates only five seniors -- Jose Jimenez, Daniel Garcia, Jerrad Barger, Joseph Cronin and Leo Chavez -- so much of the core remains intact. It will also be interesting to see what happens in realignment in the next month because soccer districts are always unpredictable due to the ever-adding programs.
