Game Recap -- Denison vs. Frisco Liberty
When it comes to vacation destinations, one place on almost everybody's list is Disney World. And while the Yellow Jackets will face a team from Florida as its next opponent and make a trip to Orlando next season, the current focus was on Frisco Liberty.
But when it comes to the Happiest Place on Earth, everyone has their favorite attractions.
Perhaps you have a wild side and like the Jungle Cruise. Perhaps you are a tad adventurous and want to take on Splash Mountain. Perhaps you are a nerd and enjoy the Hall of Presidents. Or perhaps you're a kid at heart and like making yourself throw up spinning in cups at the Mad Tea Party.
After a 56-20 loss against the Redhawks, I'll bet if you turned the Yellow Jackets loose in the park, they'd make a beeline straight for.....The Carousel of Progress. Because (everyone sing):
There's a great big beautiful tomorrow
Shining at the end of ev'ryday
There's a great big beautiful tomorrow
And tomorrow's just a dream away
Man has a dream and that's the start
He follows his dream with mind and heart
And when it becomes a reality
It's a dream come true for you and me
So there's a great big beautiful tomorrow
Shining at the end of ev'ryday
There's a great big beautiful tomorrow
Just a dream away
It was over when -- Clay Eppler and Clifton Jackson had a miscommunication on the fair catch of a kickoff with 8:37 left in the second quarter. Liberty had just scored to take a 28-13 lead and Denison was trying to respond and cut the deficit to a much more manageable touchdown. But the Redhawks recovered, scored in a little more than a minute and there was a potential 14-point swing.
It was really over when -- Denison was unable to gain a first down on its final possession of the first half. The Jackets were driving to make it 42-20 and add some positive vibes going into the second half. The series was on play number nine, fourth and five from the Liberty 36-yard line. Jordan Watson was stopped after gaining a yard with 52 seconds left.
Player of the Game -- Liberty senior running back Jay Ajayi did most of his damage in the first half. Ajayi finished the game with 207 yards and six touchdowns on 17 carries: 203 yards and five scores came on 14 first-half carries. His touchdown runs were 35, 62, 6, 15, 33 and 5 yards.
Play of the Game -- Jordan Watson's 10-yard touchdown run with 1:37 left in the first quarter. Denison's second response to a Liberty TD almost didn't happen. The Jackets started the drive on Watson's 58-yard run to the five but a penalty knocked them back to the 10. Two plays later it was third and goal from the same spot and it looked like Denison was going to end up settling for field goal. But Watson kept left and squeezed his way through a couple of defenders and ended up reaching the pylon.
The good -- After struggling to put anything together offensively in their opener, the Jackets broke out in a big way. Stacy Golston went 52 yards on the game's first play, which was one yard less than Denison's entire first-half output last week. Before the first quarter ended, the Jackets had more yards (124) and first downs (7) than it did in four quarters against Kennedale -- 100 and five, respectively. Denison had 340 yards rushing and a pair of 100-yard rushers: Stacy Golston had 199 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries and Watson had 108 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Denison also did not turn the ball over for the second straight contest. Penalties were at a minimum for the second straight outing with three for 20 yards.
The bad -- It was a different offensive scheme but the Denison defense still had trouble stopping the run. The Jackets allowed 369 yards to Liberty after Kennedale ran for 414 yards in the opener. The secondary faced its first passing attack and Zach Smith found several open receivers to the tune of 10-of-14 completions for 186 yards. Special teams was good a week ago, not very good this time out. Dalton Hestand missed an extra point, Liberty had two huge punt returns, the first a 76-yard TD called back by penalty, and there was the muff that gave the ball back to the Redhawks.
District lookahead -- It took only two weeks for all but one 13-4A team to suffer a loss. Sherman is the lone district unbeaten after a 30-7 victory over Little Elm, which is Denison's opponent in Week 3. Texas High suffered its first loss with a 26-13 loss to Jacksonville while Sulphur Springs shut out Garland Lakeview, 25-0, for its first win. The Jackets are joined by three other teams at 0-2 after Royse City lost to Frisco, 22-7, Greenville lost to Terrell, 42-7, and Mount Pleasant lost to Liberty-Eylau, 20-15. Right now its starting to shape up like a four-team race for playoff spot No. 4.
Stinging stats of the week -- It is the first three-game losing streak since Weeks 1-3 of the 2007 season (Waxahachie, Sulphur Springs, Paris)... It is the first time since 2001 that Denison lost its opening two games (Paris and Wichita Falls Hirschi). Although take heart because that team, coming off a district title, went on to make the playoffs...Cody White coached his 40th game at Denison, becoming the seventh coach to do so. All six ahead of him coached at least 50 games...Tylor McLaren and Rian Conrad threw their first passes of the season...Clifton Jackson, Roy Patti, Zach Daniel, Dakota Thomas and Josh Vick all had their first varsity catches...Jon Cazzelle led the Jackets in receiving with 14 yards on two catches...Dre Butler had his first varsity carries.
