Denison Volleyball Wrapup
The Denison volleyball team was thisclose to having another milestone season after reaching the area round a year ago.
That victory was the first playoff win by the Lady Jackets in a decade and a half. One more victory in 2011 and Denison would have had back-to-back postseason appearances for the first time since 1992-93.
But the Lady Jackets came up just short in that quest, losing a 13-4A tie-breaker for fourth place against Mount Pleasant on Saturday. Denison finished the season at 16-26 but it took five sets to keep them from the playoffs.
The struggle in that match was a theme for the season. The Lady Jackets looked great in taking a 2-0 lead but then watched an opponent storm back and force a Game 5, which is a 50/50 proposition.
Denison doesn’t lose as many seniors as it did last season but there are key contributors moving on. Libero Brieann Heaton and defensive specialist Marissa Kerby leave the back row vulnerable until replacements are found.
Then there are the Finleys — Icis and LaMonica. LaMonica returned to the sport for her final year and provided another option at the net while Icis, despite her small stature, came up with big plays and provided whatever was needed whether it was kills, assists or defense.
A large core of the roster does return and Emily Schaffer will be the leader of the group. She was a co-captain as a junior and the setter showed great toughness in the tie-breaker by playing injured over the final minutes. Jasmine Ballard will be a junior and needs to be a more consistent hitter but has all the physical tools to dominate at the net.
Jordan Nation, Jessica Higgins, Monica Eslick and Tiffany Hedgecock all contributed to the effort this season and will be back.
The only questions will be — where will Denison end up in realignment and what reinforcements will come and fit in from the junior varsity and freshman squads?
One question will be answered in February but the other won’t truly be known until next fall.
