All-Texomaland Football -- Callisburg's Long made for great year
BY JASON DELLA ROSA
HERALD DEMOCRAT
CALLISBURG -- Even though Wildcat head coach Jerry Bomar had his starting quarterback returning for his senior season, Callisburg was in store for a change behind center.
The move from Clayton Love to Thor Long paid off for Callisburg in a huge way as the Wildcats had their best season ever.
Long completed 191-of-315 passes -- 60 percent -- for 2,971 yards and 30 touchdowns with just eight interceptions and he also ran for 10 touchdowns, amazing numbers for a player in his first year on varsity and the reason Long was the Herald Democrat 2008 All-Texomaland Class 1A-2A Newcomer of the Year.
Coaches around Callisburg's district paid the sophomore a high compliment, choosing Long as the Most Valuable Player in 10-2A despite playing for a third-place team.
But Long, who was also an honorable mention all-state selection, proved his worth again in the playoffs.
Long helped lead a program that had never won in the playoffs to the region semifinals and an 8-5 mark.
