Drug arrests — Oct. 17, 401 E. U.S. 82 (Walmart), Officer Ryan Hapiuk. Sgt. Bruce Dawsey said that Hapiuk and other officers were dispatched to a retail store where two people appeared to be planning to shoplift items. By the time police arrived, the couple, a 21-year-old Gunter man and a 20-year-old Gunter woman, had discarded the concealed items, paid for a couple of things, then left. Police spoke with them outside the store, and then, after following protocol, searched their vehicle. Inside it, they found the woman in possession of a baggy of methamphetamine weighing 4.2 grams. The man was found with a silver pill container also holding more than 4 grams of meth. Both were jailed on charges of possession of controlled substance (meth) between 4-200 grams. The female remained in Grayson County Jail Wednesday in lieu of $15,000 bail. The male remained incarcerated with bail set at $25,000.

He placed the driver under arrest, then searched the vehicle and found marijuana hidden in a cologne box. The suspect, age 19, remained incarcerated late Tuesday on charges of driving while license suspended, possession of marijuana, and the warrants, with bail and cash bonds totalling $4,109.

Drug arrest — Oct. 17, 200 block Sunset, Officer Aaron Vines. Vines reported that he stopped a vehicle after seeing the driver not wearing a seatbelt. The driver’s actions were suspicious and, Dawsey said, provided probable cause for a search. Burglaries from vehicles — Oct. 18, 1:35 a.m., 2200 block Hillcrest; and 4:15 a.m. Carl Albert; Lt. Carrie Wyrick reporting. Dispatchers received calls about men going through vehicles on Hillcrest. An officer arrived and saw a man standing in the middle of the road on Denwood, going through a woman’s red wallet, throwing out papers. Crank walked up behind him and grabbed his arm, and identified himself as a police officer. Once in custody, the suspect was searched and found with two CD cases, a white ball cap, and a pocketful of change.

Police started checking the area and found four vehicles that had been gone through and, according to their owners, had items missing that matched the items the suspect had on him. Crank jailed the suspect, age 21, on four counts of 2nd-degree burglary.

Then, about 4:15 a.m., Sgt. Jim Smarr located two men, ages 18 and 30, on Carl Albert, north of Gail Farrell, who had been with the jailed suspect earlier in the evening. Smarr asked the men to go to the police station to talk about the burglaries. One man had a knife in his pocket and Sgt. Smarr asked for consent to check his person for any more weapons. The officer found a Crown Royal bag inside his coat. The bag contained assorted change and papers, including a payment book in the name of a person that Smarr knows personally.

At the police station, Smarr contacted the person whose name was on the payment book and he confirmed that the payment book was missing from his vehicle. Under Miranda, one of the men stated that he had taken items from several different vehicles. The other did not have any stolen property on him but admitted to being present during the burglaries. Police jailed the first man on 2nd-degree burglary and possession of stolen property charges. No charges have yet been filed against the other man.
