Remebering Dean Martin

I believe he was past 100 the last time he called. Dean Martin of Sherman would telephone me several times a year for a number of years, always pleasant, brief with his remarks, and usually with a joke. Most often the joke concerned golf.

The last one I remember hearing from him goes like this:

Tom, a man of faith, played golf every Sunday religiously, but only after attending church services. He was getting on in years, and one day while feeling ill, he stopped on the golf course and said a prayer: "Oh Lord, thank you for everything -- my health, my wife and my golf game. I hope when I reach Heaven I can still play golf."

When he finished, a voice thundered: "Tom, this is the Lord. I hear you and will answer you. Do you want the good news or the bad news first?"

Tom was startled. "Well," he said, "give me the good news."

The Lord replied, "The good news is that in Heaven, we have thousands of championship golf courses, play is never slow, it's always free and you will never lose a golf ball."

Tom was ecstatic, "That's wonderful! But what is the bad news?"

The Lord replied, "You tee off tomorrow at 9 a.m."

I can still remember him laughing as he reached the punchline. He had a great laugh.

Dean Martin, three months shy of his 102nd birthday, died Thursday in Sherman. He will be missed.

Mr. Martin : 11/20/2009
The first time I met Mr. Martin was several years ago when his grandchildren attended Growing Smart. He would always come in with a Big Ol Smile and talk to all the children. The children called him the bubble gum man because he always had a pack of gum in his pocket that he shared with each of them. His laughter, smile, and love of life was contagious. I always kept up with him through his Daughter Betty, due to always shopping at Sam's, and then another grandson of Mr. Dean started our center. The last time that he and his wife stopped in he was the same gum man as before, only now a little slower with his steps but his smile shown brighter than ever. He will be missed.
