AC hosts lecture on farming regulations

Attorney and organic farmer Judith McGeary will present the Austin College 2010 Will Mann Richardson lecture at 11 a.m. April 8 in Hoxie Thompson Auditorium of Sherman Hall. The lecture, "Reductionism vs. Holism: Government Regulation of Farming and Food," is free and open to the public.

McGeary will discuss "the paradigms of industrial agriculture versus sustainable agriculture, and the effects on the environment, rural economies and human health." In particular, she will address food safety legislation and animal identification programs, which she said will highlight the issues created when government regulation does not distinguish between the two types of agriculture.

McGeary holds a bachelor of science degree in biology from Stanford University and a law degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was an editor of the Texas Law Review. After a clerkship with the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, she practiced as an attorney in the fields of administrative law, litigation and appeals.

Seeing the control that corporate agriculture has on the food supply, she left her legal practice to form the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance. FARFA advocates for both farmers and consumers, providing a voice for independent agriculture on issues such as the National Animal Identification System, food safety regulation and genetically altered crops and foods.

McGeary lives with her husband on a small farm outside of Austin with quarter horses, cows, sheep and heritage-breed chickens and turkeys. The couple is active with Holistic Resource Management of Texas, the Texas Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association and the Weston A. Price Foundation.
