Updated: Countdown to election day begins

BY JERRIE WHITELEY

HERALD DEMOCRAT

Now that the children are back in school, the summer is all but over and election season is kicking into high gear. The November general election is a little more than 60 days away and local candidates are getting ready for the final stretch.

"I am feeling good," Greg Middents, Democratic candidate for Grayson County Judge said about his race for the position on the county's Commissioner's Court.

He said he has been busy putting up yard signs and is getting ready for a number of debates that are planned for the fall.

"The League (of Women Voter's) will have one and the Bar (Grayson County Bar Association) will have one," he said.

The Herald Democrat will also be sitting down with each candidate before early voting starts.

His opponent, incumbent Republican Drue Bynum, said he is also excited about the next two months, especially the debates.

"A debate is an elected official's superbowl," he said.

Bynum said gearing up for the election "does require patience and stamina. It really takes a strong, dedicated team (to) put it all together successfully."

Grayson County Treasurer Virginia Hughes, a Democrat, is facing an opponent for only the second time in her six terms in office. Hughes said she is looking forward to getting out there and talking to people. Most of the local candidates, including Hughes, will be making the festival circuit this fall. Her opponent, Republican Trent Bass, said this is the most hectic two months of the political season.

"There are still a lot of people to get to know and to get to talk to," Bass said. He said he has especially enjoyed meeting "a tremendous amount of people who I wouldn't have had the opportunity to meet had I not (run for county office)."

Voters will have several opportunities to get to meet the two candidates, along with all of the other people who are running for local offices this fall.

There are a few deadlines voters need to keep in mind in the coming months.

Sept. 3 is the first day to request a ballot by mail. The last day to make that request is Oct. 26.

Early voting for the general election starts on Oct. 18 and ends on Oct. 29.

The ballots by mail have to be returned to the Grayson County Clerk by Nov. 2.

In addition to Bynum and Hughes, County Commissioner David Whitlock also faces a challenger this fall. Whitlock will face off against Republican Roy Fuller. Democratic candidate Bart Lawrence and Democratic candidate Mike Brady will face off to see who will replace retiring commissioner Gene Short.

Ganged up on Miguel : 9/16/2010
If you folks read these comments objectively you would see that Miguel has been ganged up on. He has offered a different take on some things and if you all were the true Americans you say you are you would be more receptive to his right to free speech as a fellow American. That is what you say you stand for. Why so mad dad? It seems you feel this forum is your turf. How childish. Now, dis me. Idon't care so much.

2cents not worth a nickle

Love A Conservative : 9/16/2010
To "A Consevative" thank you for acknowledging that I am a fine one to comment about respecting other peoples opinions. At least we agree on something. As for labeling everyone who believes the things you posted as far-right extremists, I have not done that. For some strange reason, when I post something, someone will invariably respond back with what I think (or label me as something else as described earlier in excruciating detail). They try to put words in my mouth in an effort to distort what I said or mold it into their opinion of me. As someone said earlier, they (and you) make assumptions not based on facts.  I am a big boy now, and I can use adult words. If I wanted to label someone/everyone as a far right extremist then I would.
Love America, I am not sure who I am responding to since some of your post was written in a third person context. Don't know if someone high jacked your name or if you had a little out of body experience when responding. Regardless, the way that I read your compliment to Joey was "well, you're not so crazy after all, maybe you have some sense".  My point is/was that his previous comments should have been enough for you to applaud his opinions.  No other qualifications should be necessary.

Miguel

Regarding Miguels Comments : 9/16/2010
Miguel is a fine one to comment about respecting other people's opinions! There is nothing on here from him except nasty, sarcastic, pessimistic comments and he wants to label every America who wants limited government, lower taxes, a few moral values, etc, as crazy, far-right extremists! What a hypocrite and what a joke!

A Conservative

No More : 9/16/2010
Democrat No More, as I said in another post, I do not need to qualify myself to post on these articles.  What I believe does not need to be laid out on the table for you or anyone else to judge. This is not a job interview. I can and will post my thoughts as they pertain to a particular subject (or irrational thoughts of someone else).
You and several other posters provide a backhanded slap to proud current Democrats that read the posts. I've said it to others before and I will say it to you, if you aren't a Democrat, sign your name that you are a Republican, Independent, Libertarian, Librarian, Grayson County Moron, I don't care. Make up a name. If you don't like the Democratic party either work to change it or own up to something else.  As for my comments on a different article, I did not say I have done well financially, I said I have my fair share of the American Pie. What that means is up for me to determine. On the flags, you didn't catch the metaphorical part did you?

Miguel

A Compliment gets.. : 9/16/2010
dissed by Miguel. LA says he appreciates Joey's positions. What does Miguel do....takes shots. I do appreciate many of Joey's positions. I think most of them are good for America. We don't agree on everything but that should be ok. Miguel, I don't care what you do in life as long as you try to be the best you can be as a WalMart employee, banking, insurance, auto...I don't care. Just be your best. I want everyone to do well in our great country. That means less dependency on us taxpayers.

Love America

Miguel is Riled.... : 9/15/2010
Let's clear the air and see what Miguel says. Most Americans are for limited government, pro military, pro capitalism and pro personal responsibility. Now, what is hateful about that Miguel? Hey, glad to hear you have all those flags flying and you have done well financially. God bless America.

A Democrat No More

Love : 9/15/2010
Love America, you know what really irks me? Your response to Joey about who he is. Why does that bother me?  It's because I believe that until he posted his pedigree, you did not value his opinion. He and I have been branded as extreme far left liberals by a multitude of posters who have no idea what political views, economic status, education level, and (dare I say it) race either of us are.  And guess what, now I must be a pothead. Just because someone posts contradictory yet intelligent, witty, sharply sarcastic comments, they must be dope smoking, far left, liberal, socialist, communist, anti-military, unpatriotic, terrorists.  Maybe I have a similar background as Joey, maybe not. Maybe I am Bill Gates, or maybe I am the guy who just checked you out at Walmart.  What if I am a grad student at AC performing a social experiment for my doctorate?  Does it really make a difference?  Judge not lest ye be judged?  For all you pious individuals, maybe I am but a simple carpenter.

Miguel

Crazy Talk : 9/15/2010
I say YES to government protecting my rights,YES to gov. taxing to do all the things to run a great country,YES to gov.regulations to protect my health,YES to gov. security for the elderly and disabled,YES to gov. military, also for protection, etc.,etc.,etc. I say NO,NO,NO to corporate takeover, I mean continued corporate takeover of our country. KEEP CORPORATIONS WHERE THEY BELONG.IN BUSINEES.NOT MAKING LAWS THAT ARE PROFITING THEM.ah but alas it's only a dream

imagine all the world...

No More : 9/15/2010
Democrat No More, how about dialogue without the hate filled attacks?  You and several other posters have awakened me. I posted nothing on this article until someone brought me into the conversation. Then it was on.  Blogging on a topic and giving your personal views is fine with me. Generalizing and slandering the other side gets me riled up. As for personal attacks, I did not say all conservatives have a miserable existence. My comment was directed to whoever signed as "Grayson Conservative". I try not to generalize my comments. I intentionally point them to an individual in response/rebuttal to something they have posted. I also do not act like a chameleon and change my name from one post to the next.

Miguel

Not Everyday : 9/15/2010
I am only in a bad mood when I read the ridiculous comments that you evidently dream up in your spare time. What is the conspiracy? Something else that you dreamed up while smoking a little reefer, maybe? I guess anyone who disagrees with you is wrong, cynical, stupid, misguided, and so on,right? That seems to be what you indicate with your posts.

A Grayson Conservative

Say What Miguel? : 9/15/2010
I can read "Conservatives" comments so what is this about a "miserable existence". Your whole post was one of ridicule. You aren't a very nice person. It shows on most of your posts. How about dialogue without the hate filled venom and personal attacks. That's what blogging should be about. I don't think you are despicable just because you are a Democrat. Most of us were raised Democrats.

A Democrat No More

Love America : 9/15/2010
Love America, it wasn't a nice try, it was an unequivocal home run!  As I am not the initial poster on these articles, I consider my comments as the "Fair and Balancd" portion. Someone (not just you) posts something illogical/moronic, and I respond in an effort to balance it out. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I hit home runs, sometimes I just respond and have to laugh at the flustered responses. Going, going, going..... Gone!  It's another walk off.

Grayson Conservative : 9/15/2010
Grayson Conservative, do you wake up in a bad mood everyday?  Does that conspiracy cloud follow you everywhere?  I really do feel sorry that you have to live such a miserable existence.  If only there was a little hope in your life, a chance for something better.
As for myself, I have not one time been the first poster on any article.  All of my posts have been in rebuttal to someone else's comments. I also have observed that the majority of comments are initiated by self proclaimed conservatives.

Miguel

Nice Try Miguel.. : 9/14/2010
You know what I meant by the "ism" thing. I will take patriotism, conservatism and capitalism any day. To Joey, I really appreciated your post about who you are. I applaud you. We can disagree on the Iraq war and that's ok.

Love America

My My : 9/14/2010
I used the word bozo in refernce to those who make assumptions not based upon facts. To some, I may be considered a liberal, but I am far from being on the far left of the political spectrum. Personal responsibility? Hmmm. College degree, continuously and gainfully employed, have never collected any government assistance. It's a record I am willing to match against anyone, and highly recommend everyone strive to emulate. I support capital punishment, and believe it should be extended to include anyone who would roll an old lady for her purse. I fly my flag 24/7 not in the memory of 9-11, but in support of our troops serving overseas. Like many conservatives (not the neo-cons), I thought invading Iraq was stupid. I believe if we are going to spill our soldiers blood, it should be done in defense of OUR freedom. Saddam, as deplorable as he was, posed zero threat to our national security. He was nothing more than a two bit dictator with a big mouth. BTW I didn't support the first Iraq war either. It is not our place to spill American blood to restore Kings to their throne while they vacation on the Riviera. Kuwait should have taken their billions in oil $, and bought themselves their own army. You know, personal responsibility. In reality, my political beliefs are more in line with Ron Paul, but not entirely. I believe the HC bill sucks, but not for the same reasons as you. Simply opening up medicare eligibility to more folks would have been the best course of action. However, instead, we passed the Health Insurance Industry Security Act. Rather than continue, let me just say my mix of "liberal" and "conservative" views does not place me on the far left of the political spectrum. However, I don't expect that fact will deter the likes of many of you from insisting otherwise.

Joey

They Figured Us Out : 9/14/2010
Looks like Miguel and HL473 have figured us out. We republicans just sit around thinking of ways to trash democrats. I take pride in being the "party of No" as you label us. NO new taxes, NO slack for terrorists, NO government gun ban, NO government-run healthcare, NO trampling of our American freedoms, etc. I guess this you are the party of Yes, right? Higher taxes, YES. Government controlling our lives, YES. Illegal immigration, YES. Socialism, YES. Rights for terrorists, YES. Well, no thanks! I'll gladly stay with my "party of No"!!

A Grayson Conservative

Liberal : 9/14/2010
I don't necessarily think liberal is a bad label coming from some people who are too narrow minded to include us all. You will i'm sure have a snappy comeback. Somehow I picture you at a table with other Republicans reviewing the various comments and discussing ways to trash any opposistion. Much like the rest of the party of No. I know you don't actually dislike me, but ya'll must get in the last shot just in case there is anyone else actually reading our dribble. Keep on, there are still people out there wating to jump on a cause and be led as unthinking sheep into your lair. I somehow feel you 'Love America', or I, 'misguided liberal', have contributed even a little to sovling the social riddles.

HL473

Stirring Them Up : 9/14/2010
Boy I must have touched a nerve!  Didn't post anything on this article, and I am referenced twice. Not only that, there is a Republican posing as a Democrat wanting to "through" me out of the Democratic party!  Next thing you know someone will want to "trough" me out.  Love America, you say you are opposed to all those isms that come along. I suppose that also means Patriotism, Conservatism, and Capitalism?????

Miguel

Racists, Bozos, Fools.. : 9/13/2010
Words that roll off the far left lips of those like Joey and Miguel. They just follow the lead of their highjacked Democratic Party. Democrats need to take their party back from these radicals. There was a time when Democrats were pro business, pro military, pro personal responsibility and they truly showed their "patriotism" for our great country. The far left is controlling the DEM Party and it's a shame. As a Democrat, I'm fed up with it. Come on you Democrats, get mad and lets through these radicals out.

Concerned for America

Unwhatever.... : 9/13/2010
You have learned well from your liberal friends. I don't "hate" anyone. I do "love America" and want it preserved for my grandchildren. If you don't think there are Americans who want to "transform" our great country, then you aren't being very objective. I want everyone to prepare themselves for life and be the best they can be whatever their vocation. I am opposed to Socialism, Communism and any other "ism" that may come along. O yeah, I love the flag too. Makes me an extremist in Miguel's mind. We aren't supposed to show our patriotism...wrong....I will never stop doing that as long as I have breath. America, the greatest country on earth and I have no problem with our President reinforcing our greatness vs apologizing for whatever it is he thinks we have done wrong.

Love America

Not the same! : 9/12/2010
On one hand you have the party of private prison owners. And, on the other hand you have the party of prison inmates and prison guards. The non-owners are just trying to keep employed in this depression to avoid prison. The Reagan Revoltingsolution has certainly worked! Just look at the statistics. When Reagan wasp president 1 percent of the population owned 33 percent of America's wealth as measured by capital income. Today 1 percent of the population owns 58 percent of America's wealth(2006). In the first four years of Bush's presidency CEO pay went up 51 percent. During the second term CEO pay went up another 67 percent. In the first Bush term Americans at the middle or below saw their pay drop 4 percent. The bottom 20 percent saw their pay sliced by 1/5th. In this country 1% of the people own 55 percent of the stock in the market(2005). 190 million Americans own less than 3 percent of all private assets(2005). By these figures(World Bank) it is plain to see that what we need is more tax breaks for the wealthy. We have over 8.5 million millionaires and 400 billionaires in the USA(2006). These are the smart Jerry Jones's and Mark Cuban's that need to turn our country into a lean, mean, fighting Wal-mart kind of machine. Tax cuts for the people who still have money to pay taxes is what I say. We could set a new record for millionaires and be number one at something in the world.

Let's go for it.

Republican Tweak : 9/12/2010
Everything that Bush put into place Obama used! What we need now is just a Republican tweak. The Bush plan is humming right along. I have to admit that I have a soft spot for Harry Reid though. I hope he gets re-elected! It was Harry Reid that crossed the aisle and met Wild Bill Frist in the middle to pass the legislation that saved our gun companies. That happened on July 29, 2005 if you want to check it out. In fact Harry Reid is more of a modeRate DemocRate than a liberal. I suspect the reason we have our guns is that the democRats couldn't stay stupid forever and are leaning toward the center where they can find the open high ground. Harry Reid is a good liberal Republican.

Grover Norquist

Business men unite! : 9/12/2010
The really cool thing is that no one reads that "lawyery" stuff in the bills, the laws, or the congressional record. When my daddy was a boy during the Great Depressin the DemocRats 1st rammed through a bunch of communist legislation called the New Deal. All this legislation did was create jobs for worthless people that were to lazy to work. Well George Bush great man that he is, was able to get some of this communism repealed and in a very big way. On page 15,576 of the 2003 Federal Register you can celebrate because Bush inserted the passage that finally dooms the 40 hour workweek. This immediately affected 3 million workers that felt they were entitled to time and a half just because they put in a few extra hours. As a business man I shouldn't have to feel any remorse when Johnny comes marching home to his new job at the weeney factory. Heck, the laws the law, Right? That sly George Bush was just setting things back to the way they once were, and now are again. Obama might not read these things, but I sure do! Never know when you are going to find a perk or a special deal.

Donnie's brother Lonnie

Go brother Donny! : 9/12/2010
You've got that right Donny! We will once again be able to get down to business in November. Take any subject and it is amazing how little people know about what really goes on in this world.
The lottery for instance.
We all know what a crook Ol' Ben Barnes was and how he got John Connally to get Lloyd Bentsen and HWBush's boys into the Texas Guard. Heck his horse trading ways got him kicked out of his own DemocRat party. The funny thing is that Barnes became a lobbyist for a company named G-Tech and became the 23 million dollar lottery man. Well G-Tech's director got them fired as the provider for the Texas lottery by giving tons of money to her boyfriend and other friends. Well Bush didn't want Ben to lose his 23 million dollar job so he talked to the state lottery director and she agreed to let the state keep G-Tech with all of it's character and creativity. And,...the Chairwoman that let us keep G-Tech was none other than Harriet Miers who Bush appointed to the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, those devisive DemocRats saw through Bush's plan and the country found out about "Miers for Hire". But that just goes to show you. You do a favor for Republicans and they keep their word and remember you down the road. And that's just good business! What's a few million for old Ben when that lottery is one of the gems of our current economic masterpiece? Go Obama Replacements!

Donny's Bro! Lonnie

Vote Bush : 9/12/2010
Write in campaign. We want our governor back! Come on boys this will be more fun than a Number 6 dance. Like when Ken Lay got Bush to appoint Pat Wood III as utility commissioner and then we got an extra 9 billion dollars in surcharges. Enron only made 6 billion in three months and we've been collecting a billion dollars per month ever since deregulation. Theres not a day goes by that I don't look at my utility bill and thank my lickedy chops for G.W..
Go retirement fund go!!! Whoppin and a Whompin showin the uppities how bidness is done.

My decision to vote Against Mr. Bynum was made months ago. We have to show arrogant politicians they are accountable.
Is Love America actually Mr. Bynum?
Even if it is pointless, I am glad for the

I guess I lean to the left of center, I would like to say today that a piece of our heart was cut from all Americans nine years ago today. sad face

Sad Day 9/11

Not Exactly Joey : 9/11/2010
Obama was just used to contrast your statements and position on things. When Obama does it, it's ok and you defend it. When a republican does it, it's bad and you slam them for it. It's ok for Obama to force healthcare on us (and other similar issues) and refuse to listen to the people, BUT, when a republican does it (Bynum), it's "deplorable, unnecessary and cowardly". What is it when Obama does it? Commendable, necessary and brave??? You have two sets of standards Joey and that is why people are upset. Obama has NEVER taken the verbal abuse Bush did, yet he goes on tv crying that "they treat me like a dog". Bush never said a word or complained about anything. He NEVER blamed anything on the previous administration either! It's obvious which one has character and which one doesn't! Now, back to this issue, I have a serious problem with Bynum & Co stopping the public comments and I said so at the time. It is wrong to shut the people out, wrong for Bynum to do it and wrong for Obama to do it. I hope they are both replaced at election time so lpease quit making up more lies and saying I have no problem with this. Take your lies and messages of hate elswhere. Oh yeah, and you are half right about the white house press briefings: questions are asked but I am not sure they ever really answered!!

A Conservative

Politics is an art of.. : 9/11/2010
deceiving people....both parties. They don't wind up doing as they say and that includes local, state and federal. No, they don't listen Joey and your buddy Obama is a classic when it comes to talking pretty, except when his teleprompter is broken. I watched the HC discussions between DEMS and Repubs. Obama was arrogant, pompous, condescending to the other side. He was very disrespectful to John McCain who has done more with his life than Obama ever will. He was always telling people "that's not true" when they read the bill audibly. Heck, I wonder if Obama has finished reading the bill.

A Democrat No More

Typical : 9/10/2010
Why is it every bozo has to bring Obama into every discussion re: local politics? The White House holds daily press briefings where questions are asked and answered. Additionally, Obama, just like any President listens to advisors as well as citizens he meets at meetings, rallys, etc. In the end any President's decisons may not be what you or I would like. However, all this is beside the point. This is YOUR local government. They hold regular meetings to discuss and decide various issues, but refuse to let the public ask questions, make comments, or offer suggestions in that public forum. Having the opportunity to bring up questions and ideas within the context of a public forum in no way suggests the Judge or Comms will agree with those comments or follow any suggestion that may be made. However, to deny the opportunity for public comment is deplorable, unnecessary, and cowardly. Apparently, "A Conservative" has no problem with this. However, I believe many folks do.

Joey

Is Joey Serious? : 9/10/2010
Joey, how can you ramble on about it being "un-American to not listen to the people" and "arrogance" when your idol, B. Hussein Obama, demonstrates these practices daily??? This is not merely my opinion, but just pure fact whether you will admit it or not! I guess it's ok and in our best interest for a democrat to be arrogant and not listen to the people but when a republican does it, it's wrong and it's a major issue, right?? WAKE UP JOEY!! At least show some consistency on the issues without making the party affiliation the basis for your ramblings!!

A Conservative

No Good Options : 9/10/2010
I guess I should sign my name as "a democrat". Then I could say anything I wanted to openly and honestly without being called a hater or a racist. ONLY the republicans or conservative are haters and racists, right? The democrats are peace-loving, non-confrontational people...haha, uh, yeah, whatever! We treat you'all "like a dog", right? Regardless, I think that Bynum is a total joke and clearly has NOT represented the will of the people of Grayson, just like Obama. I would love to see him ousted. I am also not a Middents fan at all and never have been. He is not the solution and it is sad that, just like Obama, so many will vote for him ONLY because he is a democrat and for no other valid reason. We should vote for the best candidate who represents our political values and moral beliefs and not just based on party affiliation. If your party candidate is not a good choice, work to get someone in there who is!

Donny, er, I mean "a democrat"

Agree with Joey but.. : 9/10/2010
why do you always have to be partisan in your comments? You just can't understand that most Americans have beliefs about government long before Fox News (some 13 years ago) came on the scene and started offering both sides, something the mainline media didn't and doesn't do. These are not RNC talking points they belong to many Americans. My guess is you use DNC points from time to time. Your post was right on about public comments. The people should be heard. Does the HC bill ring a bell? Both sides don't always listen and that's why people out here are upset....local, state and federal.

A Democrat No More

Enough already : 9/9/2010
All this "nanny state" talk is oh so very cute. I know some of you cannot set aside the RNC and Fox news talking points, but THIS story is about our LOCAL elections. Not one of you can demonstrate that Middents is some kind of nanny state socialist. If you followed the jail issue it is clear that Bynum demonstrated a lack of positive leadership, a lack of organization and common sense, and distorted the facts to to support his ill-conceived ideas. Black Knight, 1600 beds, the airport site, then the Grayson Co College site, the site south of Sherman, then the site off Hwy 82. He was and on a runaway train that he set loose, and it ran over him. His was a plan without a plan. Additionally, it is incredible that any conservative voter would support Mr. Bynum or any of the existing Commissioners for their senseless and Un-American decision not to allow public comments at their regular meetings. That decision alone demonstartes pure arrogance. While there MAY be others who have taken such an extraordinary step, I have never heard of a local government adopting a policy banning public comment at public meetings. These stewards of our tax dollars will only entertain private conversations for which they cannot be held accountable. Absolutely pathetic.

Joey

Voters Have to Decide.. : 9/7/2010
What kind of Grayson County and America they want to live in. You have to choose between two different philosophies. I'm not in love with the Republican Party but I do believe America doesn't need to be "transformed". I do not believe most Americans want a "Nanny State". They believe in small government, low taxes, pro-business (our capitalist system), strong military and personal responsibility not to mention personal liberties. They are strong people who can do it for themselves. Which type are you?

I am very disappointed in His Honor, the Surpreme Commander of all Grayson County Czar Bynum. He has done a horrible job. I did have high hopes because of his West Point pedigree. Sadly mistake I made. Not again.

Before you vote pray to God for guidence on who to vote for. Yes, I am a pro-life Republican that is against over taxation, like we now have. But folks God knows our hearts and the hearts of people running for office. Vote as God leads you not just for a party, individual, or out of fear of someone standing at a voting precinct with a baseball bat. Don't be intimidated, read the voter material and let God lead you on your voting choice. That way we get the Government we need not the one we deserve.

I'll even admit to never in my life been foolish enough to have ever voted for a DemocRAT. Ralph Hall never got my vote until he woke up and came over to America's Grand Old Party. ......................
My point in posting was merely to express a bit of surprise to discover there seems to remain a handful of old "Yellow Dogs" in Grayson County who haven't yet gone toes up??

Umm, Democrats controlled Grayson Country and most of Texas years ago. The people go sick of the left leaning Democratic Party so the people started switching. By their very nature, they aren't liberal. As they say, politics is local. Do Republicans do everything right? NO! We can see the indescretions of the national Democrats ie Charley Rangel, Maxine Waters, Berniece Johnson. Come on politicians, we aren't as stupid as you think and hope for!

Ratpublicans, ratpublicans, ratpublicans..Whew! I feel better now. Wait a minute...no I don't.
DemocRats? Do you really think that is being intelligent? Imaginative? You poor little thing you...4th grade is over, you learned to spell, now run along.
How about you (Mr. DemocRat) and I (Mr.Ratpublican) go out back and change our diapers and be big boys now? Everyone can see the word LIE in BeLIEve...Yet the majority of us still have faith in our great country and our God. Amazing how that usually works out. Wouldn't it be nice if we could have a forum where we could debate the issues rather than listen to a bunch of name calling momma's boys (myself included) now that I have dived head first into the hog trough.
The thing with opponents is that you are forced to consider options, and alteratives, you have to be able to see that there is strength in compromise. The best companies take this approach. These companies know that it is not the "team players" on the "amen row" that will challenge them to be better than they thought they could be. It's the competition. If the court lacks vision then it is probably because they each look at the world in the same exact manner. Although, junkets are much more fun if you can attend them with friends and relations

Not programmed to be a Republican?/??/???

the end gane : 9/5/2010
You haters cannot spin your way out of the mess your party brought to this county. You get everything you deserve.

proud DEMOCRAT

spin, spin, spin : 9/5/2010
The WVFADIIHAGTMH poster needs to get his / her facts right. At one time there were four republicans that were going to run for County Judge against Czar Bynum.
Those four were lied too / talked out of running / tricked out of running. One got caught with his hand in the "cookie jar" because he went on an Alaska fishing trip, that he did not pay for.
So WNVFADIIHAGTMH, before you start trying to explain / spin your republican muck think before you write.
Are you trying to justify being a republican because you know this November the people will say something else?

courthouse mouse

eight more years? : 9/5/2010
After eight years of republican leadership on the Commissioner's Court are we a better off county? Remembere the leadership on the jail issue.
That one issue exposed so much what is wrong with the current crop in the courthouse.

Jimmie, Whitesboro

To Kenneth and Moderate : 9/5/2010
It's called a "primary" election. If you have problems with the current crop of Republican commissioners and county judge, where were you back last Feb. and March when I was out working in the Primary elections to help get the Republicans I wanted elected to office? If you have waited until the General Election to wake up, you've slept past your alarm. ....................................
For all of you who claim to have such a problem with Judge Bynum....First off you're all full of ka,ka. You're acting like a bunch of spoiled children. And, if you are one of the old brain dead "Yellow Dogs" trying to enter this discussion, who cares?
..................................
Simply keep in mind, two years ago we tried CHANGE for nothing more than the sake of CHANGE and anyone with two cents worth of gray matter can see what a mess that brought us.

Wouldn'tVoteDemocratIfTheyHeldAGunToMyHead

think before re-acting : 9/5/2010
The local republican party is pretty embarrassed because their County Judge and the four Comissioner's are all republican. But they cannot vote for a democrat so they just throw out hate to discredit anyone they don't like.
For the last eight years we have had two republican County Judges. Are we better off today as a county than we were four years ago? Are we better off today as a county than we were eight years ago?
This county needs leadership.

moderate republican without a party

? : 9/5/2010
So all democrats are bad people and all republicans are good people? Should the democrats just give up and disappear?
I cannot believe some of these comments posted.
Isn't the County Judge and the Commissioner's republican? Does that make "these five guys" outstanding public servants that only have the publics best interest at heart?
I would hope and think that most people want "the best person for the job." Can we look at these candidates and not the party they belong to?

Politicians : 9/4/2010
OMG say it isn't so!!!! A politician showing contempt for the surfs, well that's surely something new.
Anyone who becomes entangled in the world of professional politics will become enthralled with the power. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Any politician is like a diaper; it’s usually full of __it and needs to be changed often.

A DemocRAT is a DemocRAT : 9/4/2010
I must admit, having been born and raised in Texas I do believe I have a good understanding of how real Texans, and even real Americans believe. With this declared, I am a bit surprised to see all these DemocRATs running for office.
For if we've learned one thing in the past two years, a DemocRAT is a DemocRAT, regardless of whether they be from Grayson County, Houston, Tx, or Chicago, Illinoise.

Never voted for a DemocRAT

the king must go : 9/4/2010
The election cannot get here soon enough. Enough of King Bynum and his arrogant behavior. The debates should be interesting, Bynum has a lot of explaining to do.
I was impressed with the ad that Mr. Middents had in the newspaper. He writes about what he believes in, talks about the misdeeds of King Bynum and talks about how he would serve. Servant leadership is something new to me but I like what Mr. Middents said.

Jason, Sherman

Why Is This? : 9/4/2010
Isn't it funny how when liberals speak out against repulicans or conservatives, it is so good, valid and politically correct but when a conservative states his or her opinions against democrats or liberals (same thing) it is "hate talk" or racism or whatever? I wonder why that is? I think it is obvious in most of these cases that when you can't argue the facts or acknowledge the will of the majority, all you can do is whine and cry "racism" or "hate" and hope the good people will back off. Guess what? It's getting old people and it's effects are minimal. I guess we will see in November how well it is working for them!!

Donny

Why The Hate?? : 9/4/2010
Alen, why are you spewing such hatred against Bynum? Your hate talk really disturbs me! And moderate republican, are you serious??? You were 'impressed' with what Middents said in todays paper? Serving people? Wow! I have never heard a politician say "I am here to serve the people". What a novel concept! My own opinion? Bynum isn't worth 2 cents and Middents is even worse!! I wish they could both lose because either way the people will!

Non-Hater Independent

check your dates before you print : 9/3/2010
I also think Ms. Whiteley needs to get her facts right before writing the article. Some of the dates she has wrote down are incorrect.
As for the election, I cannot wait. We have suffered to much and told so many untruths from Czar Bynum and Company. They have no crediabilty at all.
What is this with the Czar leaving the office around two? I wish I had a job like that. I have enough trouble holding my two jobs and paying the bills.

George

clean house in November : 9/3/2010
Election Day cannot get here quick enough. Bynum and Company need to all be replaced.
In the posting that "grayson resident" posted it sound like he/she is a pretty hateful person who has a score to settle with Mr. Middents.
I was really impressed with the ad Mr. Middents had in todays newspaper. Even if half of what said is not true, the other half was very impressive. Mr. Bynum does need to answer for his misdeeds.

Walter, Howe

debates will be good : 9/3/2010
His Honor Czar Bynum needs to go. I hope in the debates he answers questions. That is something that he is not used to doing.
I was very impressed with the ad that Greg Middents had in todays paper. Serving people? Is not that what an elected official is suppose to do?
I still want to find out more about Middents before I vote but there is no way I will vote for Bynum.

moderate republican, sherman

facts vs. hate : 9/3/2010
How can Middents be attacking? Are not these things King Bynum did. The jail mess, taking people right to talk away, breaking the open records act? Before someone talks they should find out the facts.
I appreciate Mr. Middents taking Mr. Bynum to task. He needs to answer for his actions. He has a horrible record and I have no trust in him. I cannot wait till November gets here.

Katie, Sherman

just hate talk : 9/3/2010
The hate talk is beginning, just read the comment of "grayson resident." I cannot believe the hate in his or her writing.
As for attacking Middents, he was one of the best elected officials this county has ever had. Look at his record as a Judge and his community service. Has Mr. Bynum done any? I think not. Look at the ad Middents has in todays newspaper. He is right on target. The misdeeds of Mr. Bynum need to be exposed. That is not "attack politices" it is trying to find out the facts.
Hey "grayson resident" I see you do not identify yourself, brave move, you have a lot of crediability in my book.

Alen, Denison

elections : 9/3/2010
The democratic candiate for County Judge has started attacking his opponent and is claiming he will be attacked and vilified. Don't let middents get away with distorting his record, he was incompetent as JP. Ask him how many times he had to go to Austin and explain things he did. His truancy program wasn't any betters than anyone else and the program in place now is much better. The duties or different, he has no idea what the County Judge does, don't make Grayson County the laughing stock of the State.

grayson resident

Can't Wait!! : 9/3/2010
I cannot wait until November. This will be one time when Obama and the democrats CANNOT refuse to hear the will of the American people! Either way, we will then know how the MAJORITY of the American people feel about this administration and it's policies!

Donny

November Election : 9/3/2010
I see Gene Short has decided to retire or maybe he sees the writing on the wall. I hope our voters in Grayson County remember what ALMOST happened with the County jail and votes David Whitlock out and let's not forget the ring leader Drue Bynum. I grew up knowing Greg Middents and I believe he will make a great addition to the Commissioners Court.

Sid P.

get your facts right : 9/3/2010
Two days for early voting? I don't think so. I also think Lawerence is a republican.
I have to laugh when Czar Bynum says the word "team." It is all and only about him, not teamwork and certainly not listening.
I'm glad there will be debates and hopefully some good articles. The public deserves an honest debate.
One idea that
I wish the HD would consider endorsing candidates. With all the issues that has taken place in our county I think the HD should step up to the plate.

courthouse junkie

bad reporting : 9/3/2010
I think Ms. Whiteley needs to get the facts, dates and candidates right before she does any reporting. Very poor article Jerrie.
I am really glad the election is here. His Honor, the Surpreme Ruler of all Grayson County Czar Bynum needs to answer for his actions.
The jail issue is probably the most talked about issue with the second being, taking the peoples right to speak away.
Mr. Bynum you had my vote in the last election but there is no way I will vote for you again.
