College Roundup — GCC women get second conference victory

HERALD DEMOCRAT

Rashawndria Johnson scored 20 points, grabbed six rebounds and made three steals, leading Grayson County College's women to their second North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference win of the season, 79-52, over Ranger College on Saturday.

Cortney Smith added a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards, and Eva Urbanowska added 14 points and six rebounds. Alex O'Neal scored 13 points and dished out seven assists.

The Lady Vikings had control of the game from the outset, leading Ranger at the half, 40-18.

Grayson hosts Temple College on Wednesday night, with the women's game to tip off at 5:30 p.m. and the men to follow.

SOSU 85, SWOSU 71

WEATHERFORD, Okla. -- Southeastern (19-6, 9-3) got 46 points from its bench and 18 points each from Destiny Brown and Elizabeth Dean en route to a win over Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon.

Brown turned in her 11th double-double of the season with 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. The bench scoring was bolstered by Dean's 18 points along with Jessica Hesse who chipped in 11.

SOSU held a 38-to-34 rebounding edge thanks to Brown's 11 boards along with six from Dean and five from Hesse.

Kacey Russel dished out a game-best four assists and added nine points, while Whitney Coffey also added nine points and grabbed four steals.

SOSU will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Denton to face Texas Woman's at 7 p.m.

Men's basketball
SWOSU 71, SOSU 55

WEATHERFORD, Okla. -- Southeastern (10-16, 5-6) shot 47.6 percent, but was unable to keep Southwestern Oklahoma State under that.

The loss puts the two teams in a virtual tie for the fourth and final spot for the LSC Post Season Tournament. The Storm has one more contest remaining, next Saturday at home against Central Oklahoma, while SWOSU will face Texas A&M-Commerce on the road on Wednesday and host Northeastern State on Saturday.

An SOSU win would secure a postseason berth for the Storm. Even if the Storm were to fall to UCO, a pair of Bulldog losses would give SOSU the edge by a tiebreaker.

In Saturday's game, Jordan Lee was the squad's high-scorer in his return to the court, with 12 points, while Chibuzo Elonu pitched in 11 and completed the double-double with 10 rebounds.

William Slones added nine points and two blocks.

Baseball
GCC 11, San Jac 7
GCC 15, Paris 4, (5)

Grayson's baseball team had a productive weekend with a pair of wins, including one over national power Jan Jacinto on Friday in which they broke a tie game with four runs in the bottom of the eighth.

The Vikings (6-4) hammered out 14 hits against San Jac, with Josh Rosecrans going 3-for-4 and Rob Perrin going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBI. Jake Schrader and Roger Bernal each added two hits and combined for three RBI.

Ty Herrick wound up the winner in relief after Grayson's bullpen blew a 7-0 lead in the top of the eighth. Starter Chris Howard threw seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts, but got a no-decision.

On Saturday, Rosecrans belted a grand slam as the Vikings went deep four times in the run-rule win over Paris. Perrin and Schrader each homered and batted 2-for-4, and Justin Biggins added a leadoff bomb. Bernal was 3-for-4 with two doubles.

The Vikings travel to Tyler Junior College on Monday afternoon.

AC 2-6, Hendrix 1-0

The Austin College baseball team (4-6, 2-3) swept its doubleheader with SCAC rival Hendrix behind a pair of stellar pitching performances from Tyler Steed and Will Chermak on Saturday.

In the bottom of the seventh, after Phillip Gonzales was hit by a pitch with one out and then stole second and moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jordan Robison, the Warriors intentionally walked Brian Buehler and Bennett Herrick to load the bases and try to get the force out. However, Matt Burke's grounder to second gave Gonzales enough time to beat the throw home and give the 'Roos the one run victory.

Buehler finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Andy White went 2-for-4. Steed scattered six hits over seven innings to earn the complete-game win.

The 'Roos wasted little time getting out to a big lead in the second game, plating five runs in the bottom of the first, and it would prove to be more than enough of a cushion for Chermak the rest of the way.

Scooter Merritt finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and Scott Cottingham went 2-for-3 with two doubles, while Chermak earned the complete game shutout by going nine innings and allowing just six hits and no walks.

Austin College is home again next weekend when they host Southwestern for a three game series in another SCAC matchup.

Softball
AC 6-8, H. Payne 9-6

The 'Roos (4-2) split their doubleheader with Howard Payne on Saturday, falling in extra innings in Game 1 before taking the second game.

The 'Roos took a 6-2 lead into the top of the seventh before Howard Payne came storming back to tie things at 6-6 and force extra innings. In the top of the eighth, the Lady Jackets jumped on top on a three-run homer.

Stefanie Faith finished 2-for-4 with a homer and two runs batted in, and Sam Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Chelsea Delaney added a three-run homer.

Sam Matulis threw eight innings, surrendering nine runs on 16 hits while striking out five batters.

In the nightcap, the 'Roos grabbed a 5-2 lead in the fourth after an RBI double by Smith and a two run homer by Carolyn Stone, and the lead grew to 8-2 in the fifth when Stone, Jennifer Dowsey and Kali Gossett each collected RBI hits.

Ashley Johnson earned the win, throwing seven innings and allowing six runs on 10 hits.

Austin College is home again on Tuesday when they take on the University of Texas-Dallas at Old Settlers Park with the first game of the doubleheader set for 5 p.m.

SOSU 4-2 at festival

DURANT -- Despite a sluggish start to the day, Southeastern recovered and finished Day 2 of the Southeastern Festival winning 4-of-6 on the weekend at the impromptu festival held at the Southeastern Softball Field.

Game 1 did not go as planned for the Savage Storm, falling to Southern Arkansas, 15-4, but SOSU recovered and defeated Texas A&M-International, 5-4, and picked up a revenge win in the nightcap, beating SAU, 8-1.

Games will conclude today with Southeastern facing Texas A&M-International at 10 a.m., followed by TAMIU against Southern Arkansas at noon.

Jeana Keyes turned in the only multi-hit outing in Game 1, finishing 2-for-3, while Ryan Allen had two RBI and Ali Manship added another.

Against TAMIU, Amanda Tanner finished with three RBI, while Cassy Tice and Erika Bernal each added two and Keyes drove in one.

On Friday, SOSU won 2-of-3 over TAMIU, dropping the opener to the Dustdevils, 12-7, and responding with a 6-4 win in Game 2 and a 9-2 win in the day's finale.

Not saying I'm with them in this assessment, but the HD could care less about Grayson, AC, or SE Okla. How many sporting events do you see any of them at? None!

Mind your Ps and Qs

GCC men also won over Ranger. Grayson has already secured a playoff spot.
