HERALD DEMOCRAT
The Austin College men's basketball team overcame a double digit halftime deficit to topple the No. 12-ranked University of Texas-Dallas, 79-77 in overtime, on Sunday in the team's season opener.
Kola Alade led four 'Roos in double figures with 15 points in the victory.
Trailing by 72-68 with 36 seconds remaining, Kyle Lintelman completed a 3-point play to cut it to one and after UTD's Brandon Greene hit 1-of-2 from the line, Alade drove in for an uncontested layup after a UTD defender fell down to tie things at 73 and send the game into overtime.
The 'Roos jumped on top 76-73 on a 3-pointer from Chris Sturtevant and Lintelman added a layup to make it a 78-73 game with 1:34 to go in overtime and the 'Roos would not look back, holding off the Comets for the two-point victory.
Alade hit 7-of-12 from the field to finish with 15 points and added six assists, four rebounds and three steals to lead the 'Roos. Lintelman added 13 points and a career-best eight steals, while Nick Wade came off the bench hit 4-of-6 from deep to finish with 12 points and Scott Straley hit 5-of-10 from the field and 2-of-4 from deep to finish with 12 more points off the bench. The 'Roos had 21 assists against just 13 turnovers as a team while forcing the Comets into 21 turnovers.
In Sunday's women's game, Austin College came back from 17 points in the second half and led with just over two minutes remaining, but the 'Roos could not hold off the No. 17-ranked Comets in their season opener, falling 51-48 despite 15 points and 15 boards from Katy Willlams.
Williams hit 6-of-10 from the field and five of her 15 boards came on the offensive glass, and Kayla Redden knocked down 3-of-5 from deep and 4-of-6 overall to finish with 11 points. Amber Stafford handed out a game-high six assists in the loss.
Both Austin College teams are home again on Tuesday when they play host to LeTourneau, with tip time set for 6 p.m. for the women.
