Bearcats bounced by Newman Smith

BY BILL SPINKS
HERALD DEMOCRAT

PLANO — It wasn’t supposed to end like this for Sherman. But it did.

While Carrollton Newman Smith’s players across the way were celebrating their first playoff victory in 26 seasons Friday night, Bearcats coach Gary Kinne was left consoling each of his 26 seniors on the high-crowned playing surface of John Clark Stadium in a 56-35 loss in the Class 4A Division I bi-district round.

“There’s no words for the seniors; I’m very proud of them,” said Kinne afterward. “They set the bar high here the last two years, and it’s going to pay great dividends for these juniors that are coming up.”

The Bearcats (8-3) ended their season exactly as they did a year ago, with a runner-up finish in District 9-4A and a pair of bitter losses to close things out. The Cats lost to Denison, 43-28, last Friday in the 111th Battle of the Ax.

Newman Smith’s 56 points equaled Ennis’ 2000 total for the second-most points ever scored against Sherman in a playoff game, behind Waco’s 59-0 win in the 1927 Class A state semifinals.

The Bearcats stayed within 26-21 in the third quarter after junior Zac Whitfield’s 67-yard run with 8:26 remaining, but from there on out it was all Newman Smith as they broke the game open with 23 consecutive points scored.

“Their offense is a really good offense,” said senior Robert Fallon. “Our defense played a good game and our offense played a good game. We just weren’t prepared enough, it seems. We didn’t come out with all engines firing, and they did, so they had the upper hand on this one.”

The Bearcats couldn’t find a way to stop the Trojan triumvirate of quarterback Aldo Quiroga, wide receiver Al Lasker, and running back Randall Joyner in the second half as Newman Smith broke open a 20-14 game.

“We felt like we had a chance at halftime,” Kinne said. “We were down six and we were getting the ball. We needed to come down and take the lead, and we just sputtered the first drive. We lost the momentum right there.”

Quiroga was 15-of-21 for 241 passing yards and rushed for 60 yards and two touchdowns. Joyner was a force on both sides of the ball, with 122 rushing yards and three touchdowns offensively and two interceptions defensively; and Lasker, a cousin of former Arkansas and New York Giants safety Greg Lasker, caught eight passes — all eight for first downs — and 139 yards.

The Bearcats had 470 total offensive yards, but the difference in the game was in turnovers. While the Trojans (9-2) had none, Sherman quarterback Madison Carter, who entered the game with only one interception thrown all year, was picked off three times — twice by Joyner, and once by Jeremy Stallworth for a 27-yard pick-six that slammed the door shut.

“We bogged down a few times and just couldn’t quite get over the hump,” Kinne said. “We scored some points, but just not enough against these guys. They’re very talented.”

Senior Dylon Beamesderfer, a converted quarterback who caught the season’s first touchdown way back in the season opener against Lake Dallas, had two early TD catches from Carter against the Trojans. Whitfield ran for 173 yards to reach quadruple digits for the season and added a late scoring pass catch from backup Thor Long, who rounded out the Cats’ scoring with a 4-yard run with 1:37 left and was 7-of-8 in mop-up passing duty for 126 yards.

Sherman led in the second quarter, 14-10, after Beamesderfer’s big-time 42-yard catch from Carter in which he bounced off a tackler, stiff-armed another, and dove for the pylon at the 8:41 mark.

But after an exchange of punts, a strong punt return by Newman Smith’s Lasker with a late-hit penalty tacked-on gave the Trojans excellent field position, and they cashed in with Braxton Bearden's 9-yard run with 3:13 left to regain the lead for good.

With 55 seconds left, Newman Smith got the ball back on downs on the Sherman 47, and Quiroga moved the Trojans into field-goal range. Trojan kicker Philippe Ichter — who finished with three field goals, all with a 15-mph wind at his back — drilled a 31-yarder on the final play of the half for a 20-14 halftime lead.

“I’m proud of everyone on this team; we had a great season,” Fallon said. “I’m going to miss all of them; they’re all my brothers and I love them all.”

A Good Season : 11/29/2009
When trying to evaluate the 2009 season a person should consider how the year started, the loss of talent to graduation, the coaching change, the season long field condition. When you think about those factors I believe that anyone would be impressed with the coaching and the players themselves. The Bearcats 2 reg. season losses were to playoff teams and the playoff loss was to a very good NS team. Of course some things need to be improved, but all-in-all, it was a Good Season. This is the most intrested that I have been in Bearcat football in years and it is because of Coach Kinne. It is my hope that he stays around here for years and develops a new attitude for our Bearcats. Happy Thanksgiving

Great Year Sherman : 11/27/2009
Why do we always have to have excuses when things don't go our way? We don't have to blame anyone for a great year! I think the Bearcats did well and when you look at the whole picture it was a fun year.

I'll tell you why all that was going on, because winning football games is not important to the student body as well as the community as a whole. Winning football games is a group effort whether you are playing or supporting. If you look at a place like Celina or Southlake I'll bet their cheerleaders and band are paying attention. The whole mentality of the community must change towards winning and everything that goes along with winning(support, hard work, good coaches, attitude, and facilities). If you make a playoff game this year take a look at the good programs and see if they are not all on the same page.

Since someone mentioned the cheerleaders, I would like to add how much I noticed that our cheerleaders and band just goofed off. It seemed that the Newman Smith band played much more upbeat, football fighting songs. Sitting next to the band I was able to see the members running around, calling down to the cheerleaders, spending way more time just goofing around then being involved in the game. Why is this? Just my 2 cents.

Cats Are # 1 : 11/24/2009
We have so many cheerleaders because basically anyone that goes out makes it because we don't want to make any of the girls feel left out or make parents mad. This is the new way to run things in schools, it's all about making EVERYBODY happy.

Old School

What Cheerleaders? : 11/24/2009
To longtime Bearcat fan: Football players on the sidelines is nothing new. I have seen college team players and NFL players do the same thing. Since you brought it up, why do we have so many cheerleaders? They stand together never spread out or split up to motivate the crowd. We have more cheerleaders than any of the larger schools we play. Its not helping. Maybe that program needs a new director as well.

Concerning our new coaches...I felt like Coach Kinne and his staff did an excellent job under difficult conditions. Although I can't really agree with some of their methods and tactics, the bottom line is I thought we played harder than in the past, and we were a better prepared football team. We still don't know when to go for one or two after touchdowns, but that's another issue. As for our "mini-kinnes", Graham and Sims, cursing and "getting physical" with young football players may get them to fear you, but it doesn't get them to respect you. Think about it!

One who knows

: 11/23/2009
To "standing Cat" who stated "how many times did you see players walking up and down the sidelines trying to get the fans involved..." Well, as far as I am concerned, one time was one time too many. That's what cheerleaders are for. The players need to be watching the game, not worrying about how loud the fans are. If that's their major concern, then they should trade in their pads and helmet for a skirt and some pom poms. Maybe that's part of the reason that they are on the sidelines in the first place, rather than on the field playing. Just leave that "stuff" for the real cheerleaders, and concentrate on what's happening on the field instead of what's going on in the stands.

I agree with you that the community of Sherman, both the parents of students and citizens, need to step-up and not just say that they support the athletic programs, but support them with their pocket books. Dr. Hambrick recentley said in the Herald, that the board was continuing to assess the situation with the facilites. What does that mean? We all know that the facilites are old and outdated, what are they going to assess? How many of you have informed Dr. Hambrick of your willingness to vote for a bond package to fund the improvements? How many will vote for a person that supports a bond package to pay for the new things? It is up to us now how many of us will do our part?

Did you ever consider... : 11/23/2009
That maybe Sherman just played a BETTER team? Newman Smith's senior class has been lauded since they were freshmen. They were loaded then, they started as sophomores, and now they are having success. Heaven forbid that Sherman lose to a better team huh? Now, aside from that, you guys are correct, it is a horrible situation to be in as a Head Coach with a staff of guys that you didnt bring in, especially if one or two of them interviewed for your job. It makes for a rough year.

Carter as quarterback : 11/23/2009
To "watched every game for three years" who states "that there were two players on the sidelines better than Carter for quarterback", I can only say that is the most asinine comment I have seen yet. If that was actually true don't you think Kinne would have been playing these other "stars"? Obviously the coaches felt like Carter was the best or he wouldn't have been starting. It shows a lack of real football knowledge to think that what players do in "mop up" roles is a real indication of their actual ability. Anyone who watched Sherman this year and isn't able to realize that Carter was the best man for the quarterback job simply doesn't know his posterior from an entrenchment in the earth!!! Perhaps you should miss a game or two, as it is obvious that all this football watching has adversely effected your knowledge of the game.

Right way and the wrong way : 11/22/2009
Sherman will never have a successful program because the community will not support it. You have to spend the money I think the community proved that they weren't going to do that last year. Also, those of you that expect Kinne to stick around are living in the clouds. The definition of insanity is doing something over and over and expecting a different result. Well apply this to anyone who hires this joke. If you parents want your kids to be berated and talked to like they are sub-human then by all means keep the pos around. Also, look for the other athletic programs to go down the tubes if he stays.

Im Excited for Next Year! : 11/22/2009
I liked how the juniors stepped it up. When Thor Long went in at quarterback it was a whole new team against Newman-Smith. I saw life come into our Bearcats. Long and Zach Whitfield with Nathan James, and Tory Minor will accent each other very well next season.
Long's passing will open up more running yards for the athletic speedster Zach Whitfield. Whitfield will keep the defenses off balance and make the receiving corps more dangerous. They have some players coming up from the JV and I heard a couple 9th graders that are good too. I think Kyle Crick will be leading the "D" and Deago Mingura leading the "O-Line".
Go Bearcats!

Coach Kinne has made some postiive changes to the football program just within the little time he has been here. My Son has not had any issues with Kinne or his coaching. In fact he is excited about the opportunites that he has been given and the knowledged that if he works hard and shows results then he will get many more opportunities. He did not have the same outlook last year or the same type of support. This work ethic has also poured over into academics improving both his grades and outlook for college. I am glad my Son is playing for Coach Kinne and I hope Kinne remains the Bearcat Coach for an extended time.

Something Different : 11/20/2009
A big difference this year that will apply to next year is that there will be a good offseason program and the coach will actually show up for offseason workouts so he will know what is going on, and yes what I Am A Kinne Fan said about offseason workouts is right. That is where a lot of next years games are won or lost.

As a Bearcat parent, I wonder how many of you who post your comments have a son on the football team? What gives you the ability to say that Coach Kinne is not right for Sherman? Every interaction with my son has been in the form of a positive challenge. How many of you have taken your concerns directly to Coach Kinne? To all of the complainers, why don't you stop complaing and do something to support BC athletics? How many of you are members of the Booster Club? How many of you know that next years success starts with the sub-varsity programs, the weight room, the conditioning? Are you as fans doing anything to make those programs top-flight? Probably not. I hope that Coach Kinne chooses to stay around inspite of a few idiots.

Could you please not post the blog with Psalm 109:8 verse quoted?? Some may think that that was a very bad thing to say. They perceive it as death. But it only was intended to mean that his time in Sherman be limited, and that someone else get that job. I wish Coach Kinne only the best. He had been through tremendous hardships. But he's just not right for sherman. It is not my intention to stir up more problems on here. So please don't post the comment. It was intended tobe mean.

Please don't post

Coach Kinne : 11/19/2009
Could someone please explain what makes Kinne a poor fit for Sherman? Also, with all of this talk of how bad the coach is and how bad our stadium is, only one person showed up at the school board meeting to talk about it. The people that come on here and complain are nothing but a bunch of blowhards.

Were you not watching the game? How many times did Whitfield get the ball? It sure wasn't as much as he needed to or did earlier in the season. You can sugarcoat it however you like it. Changing play calling duties just in time for the playoffs really makes me wonder. I know a lot of the kids were trying to figure out what the heck was going on. Sure way to lose if that's what the head coach was looking for.

So it's Tipps, Youngs, and Slecta's fault we lost in the first round this time??? Are you Kidding me?? Kinne is a good coach but the dissension among the coaching staff affected the teams performance above anything else. TRUST ME......not all is well behind closed doors!

Kinne's not the problem!

The Change Will Come : 11/19/2009
Changes will come to the coaching staff next year and hopefully new things will be seen(get the ball to #29 a lot more please). I agree with everything that ex-bearcat says particularly the part about coaches not being able to get after kids without mom or dad getting mad and the kid taking it personally. We are still feeling the loss of Coach Outlaw, but I don't want to get started on that subject. I do have one disagreement with you ex-bearcat I do think Coach McCullough is a good basketball coach I think he just made a bad decision that night. I really hope changes help improve the program next year because I am tired of reading posts from the Denison fans. They are making me sick griping about playoff sites and pep rally locations. A little bit on the ridiculous side, they should be glad they are where they are, but maybe they are a little spoiled. Hopefully things will begin to change next year.

: 11/19/2009
Come on ex- Bearcat are you going to bring up something that happened a few years ago as your dispute to Coach McCullough not being a good coach?? Really??? Check the LAST few years - repeat district champs, didn't get beat in a first round play off game, and just LAST year lead his team farther in history in the playoffs than they've ever been!!! So, nice fact ex cat!! As far as Kinne goes - he's just not a good fit for SISD! Sugar coat your untruths anyway you like, but that's true. He may be good at what he does, just not here. We don't care if he yells at our kids, we just don't like the cussing and belittling. I guess that you're entitled to your opinion - I just wish that you had facts. Our kids played under these three men...

Facts : 11/19/2009
For the record coach Young left on his own for a better position that fit him at this time in his life. He wasn't ran out of town like coach Outlaws group. Which oh by the way still is doing nothing but, winning. Kids now days a to spoiled and to soft. If a coach raises his voice at a player around here now he is to hard. It showed in the Sherman and Denison game. Denison slapped Sherman in the mouth all game and we just took it. How can you say McCulloughs a good coach? Have you forgot about the twenty point lead Sherman blew a few years ago in the fourth quarter of a playoff game because he stopped running and tried to stall on the ball. Now that is some good coaching let me tell you. I played under both forms of coaching. I played under Outlaw and Tipps. Playing for Outlaw you would have ran through a wall for him. Tipps you were glad we just had more talent than other teams. Coaching here in Sherman has been way off for many years, but you get what you pay for.

Did I miss something? : 11/19/2009
Not a Fan,
I saw nothing wrong with the play calling during the game at all.
This rests on the OC of old from day one and his favoritisms over the team.
We all knew what he was doing. He and Young have done it for years. We should have said something. We didn't. Our boys were knocked out early. That's what hurt our boys in the end.
It came out in the end...plain and simple

Kinne Coaching staff has done a tremendous job here under unwelcoming circumstances. If there is any blame, it squarely rest on the Offensive Coordinator. He played politics and it backfired on him.

Not Sure Yet : 11/17/2009
I'll be the first to admit that I don't know if Coach Kinne is the right one yet. He came in virtually right before the season started and had to get to know his players on the run, put in a new offense and defense, become famaliar with his district opponents and most of all get settled in Sherman. All this while trying to win football games which he was brought in to do. No way any of us would want to be judged after such a short period of time and under these circumstances. Give him a year to implement his offseason workouts, become better acquainted with the kids and most of all hire his own complete coaching staff. There has to be a reason he has been successful at other stops and that he won a Coach of the Year. Let's at least give him a chance to prove whether he is the right coach or not. If he is not then we start over again which is never good. If you look at most of the good programs in the state there is a sense of stability in the coaching staff and within the program. If we want this program to be what I think we want it to be then we must look at upgrading our facilities and stabalizing our coaching situation.

Execution : 11/17/2009
Parents have to eventually realize that alot of the blame has to be passed to the players, to continually blame the coaches only gives the boys an excuse or an out. They are no going to be perfect but when they make a mistake and get corrected the parent is the first one to say,"My son isn't the only one that made a mistake." Instead of backing the coach. Accountability and the fear of being singled out makes better players. Read articles from the 80's when T.R. Sullivan wrote for the Herald, he named names on errors and mistakes as often as good plays.
ACCOUNTABILITY!!!! We need another writer that covers sports the way it should be, not afraid to ruffle feathers and skew stats.

Class of 85

Sherman Fans : 11/17/2009
Sherman fans left those boys hanging. Most of you on here are content to blame the team and coaching staff, well look in the mirror. How many of you were at every game both home and away screaming and yelling for your team? Sherman Fans used to be better than this. Students that wanted to attend and didnt have a way should have been bussed in, business could have purchased student tickets and given them away. We should have had signs on the stadium walls, Fans in a sea of maroon and white with cheerleaders able to cheer to a visibly organized student section. Newman Smith came to win and so did their fans as they did all the above. Coach Kinne needs to take a page out of McCulloughs book and create his own 6th or rather 12th man section. How many times did you see players walking up and down the sidelines trying to get the fans to "Stand up, be there for the team and get involved". Cats played a good season, it could have been better but then so could their fans.

Standing Cat

: 11/17/2009
I agree whole-heartedly that there needs to be coaching changes next year. I'm just not sure if we agree on the same ones!! I don't think that Coach Kinne and his coaches are a good fit for SISD. I realize that he may have a fabulous past record, but coaches are not focused on wins/losses. Good coaches are leaders by example, encouragers, organized. People say that we who don't care for Kinne don't like change. I believe I read where someone wrote that change is a hard pill to swallow. I like change, in fact change is needed so much of the time. I don't always agree with change, but when I see that it may good in the long run, it's easy to jump on board and be supportive. I see no good coming from Coach Kinne and the partial staff that he brought. Kids deserve better and so does this district. I'm sure that they were all fabulous college coaches, just not a good fit for Sherman high. Kids don't need to be called quitters.

Time for chane, again

Quit Trash Talking : 11/16/2009
Sports Authority, if you really are a Jacket fan instead of someone else trying to stir up the pot here, then how about stopping the trash talking? I love the Yellow Jackets too, but the Axe game is over for another year. Now there are bigger fish to fry in the playoffs, so focus on that. And Bearcat Mom, I agree, Defector is a joke because of those comments. But as for the Cats being better behaved, well, let's just say that no one on either side of this rivalry can claim a clean slate on sportsmanship, trash talking, school and property vandalism, etc. I've seen both sides be guilty of plenty of stupid behavior down through the years...

Better Bearcats next year : 11/16/2009
Congrats to the Bearcats on another good season. Next year promises to be much better. Anybody who thinks there wasnt alot of tension on the coaching staff is crazy. Most of them will be gone and thats a good thing. Coach Kinne will be able to bring in people he can trust and that will help the team. Too bad for the sr.'s this year. Reality is that the cats weren't going too far anyhow as long as #4 was at QB. He was a decent athlete but not a QB. There were two players on the sideline that were way more capable than him but he only played because of 2 reasons: he was a senior and the carryover staff from Coach Young didn't give the others a real chance. We will see how good the Cats are next year when they have a real QB with leadership capabilities under center.

Sherman fans are welcome to support our Jackets now that they are once again....in basketball or chess or whatever they do in the off season. It's unfortunate that the season had to end on such a sour note. On a more positive note, it once again won't take long to carry out the only district trophy the Bearcats have earned in the past decade before each practice. Denison would need a trailer and army to accomplish that each practice. Go Jackets !

Not Complete : 11/16/2009
Coach Kinne will need to bring in the rest of his coaching staff next year because a lot of the coaches will not be here next year. Not these coaches fault, just part of the business. I do hope next years Off. Coordinator will understand that #29 needs to get the ball more than 13 times a game. Coach Kinne needs more than 1 year to be judged on. After that all is fair in love and war. Please let's also take a look at the facilities and try and get them up to 4A speed.

Ha. Nice try Bearcats... Maybe next year. It seems to me, there is not alot of positive parental support ie: Booster club, etc. Just smack talk. Maybe the boys would play better if the parents behaved better. Not the same people doing the same thing. Take a lesson from Denison. The parent support is awesome, the boys play awesome! Booster club makes oney be having great tshirts people want to buy. In fact, many from Sherman bought the Denison axe shirt, cuase Sherman's sucked.

New Coach Same Results : 11/16/2009
With all the hoopla surrounding the hiring of Coach Kinne and the nucleus of seniors we had on this years team, I, like many Bearcat fans, was expecting a better ending to our season. However, after reviewing the stats for the year, our record for district, and the playoff loss, I am left wondering why was it we changed coaches? If the end result was winning then we are way off base. If the end result was to get Coach Young out of town then I guess it worked out ok. Either way we are left with a talented team that is once again sitting at home instead of living up to their potential.

No sugar coating : 11/16/2009
Not sure if you want to say being positive is sugarcoating.....Most of these seniors will not play another down of football again, and so what if they don't. You cant be negative all the time, it's just a football game. That's half the problem w/most people, they take the game way too serious. You cant have any fun if you take it so serious. Lighten up and lets get ready for basketball/baseball.

Nice run bearcats. I hated to see an early exit for those great senior kids. You've worked hard since 7th grade and too bad that you couldn't have been surrounded you with the leadership to take you further in the play offs. With the majority of players returning and high expectations it appeared that we actually took steps backward. No fault of the players though. Hold your heads high and be proud of what fine young men you've become.

I agree : 11/15/2009
Lance, you make some valid points, and will Kinne be held accountable the same way Drew Young was? I love the posters on here who come on and say Sherman had a great season and want to sugarcoat everything. If this season was so great, then that means there have been two great seasons for Sherman the last 2 years.

Live by the sword... : 11/15/2009
Sherman's defense for the last 2 weeks seemed to be all to content on continuing to blitz on 95% of their defensive calls (Live by the sword, die by the sword...). Both Denison and Newman Smith picked up on this - and scored a bunch of points in doing so. I realize Sherman played this way all year, but one might think that a) a Head Coach with a major college defensive playing and coaching background as well as b) a defensive coordinator with college coaching experience would have made better in-game adjustments. Perhaps drop linebackers back in coverage or in a zone, or maybe give your CBs some help on #6 who Sherman didn't seem to cover all night. This much acclaimed football staff just produced a lot of the same results the last one did (loss to Denison, early exit in the playoffs, etc). And next year's defense will have a lot of playmakers to replace. I guess we'll get to see multiple blitzes a game against likely weaker district opponents - then a typical loss to Denison and out early in the playoffs.

I just want to congratulate the players on this team that put in all the hard work all year long. It is a terrible feeling to lose any game, but its much harder to lose in the playoffs. Sherman you had a good season and you should be proud of what you have accomplished. Keep your heads held high. To all the fans that always have something bad to say. Please show a little respect to these seniors, some of whom may never put the pads on again.

Bear Cat Season : 11/14/2009
I would like to congratulate Coach Kinne and the Bear Cat football team for a memorable season. The 2009 Bear Cats will be remembered for how the team responded to the many challenges that they faced. Once again a big "Thank You and Job Well Done" to all of those involved.

Playoff drought... : 11/14/2009
Congrats to the Cats on another nice "regular season". At the same time - we have to be concerned that again there is not a playoff win at the conclusion of the year. This is now the longest stretch (6 seasons) in over 2 decades without any success in the post season. Wins over the Frisco ISD teams have proven hollow and in no way prepare SHS for real competition. Kinne has got to get it going and some depth has to be estbalished. Most of our first tier players (God Bless those kids) had to contribute "both ways" and this obviously hurts you more as the season wears on. Looking forward to a playoff win in 2010?
