Hagerman programs lead list of things to do in Texoma

Elephant seals will be the topic of this week's Second Saturday program at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. The free program begins at 10 a.m. in the refuge's audio visual classroom, and is sponsored by the Friends of Hagerman.

Presenting the program is Dr. Steve Goldsmith, a professor of biology and dean of sciences at Austin College. His courses have included topics such as evolution, behavior and ecology, and his research interests are ecology and evolution of insect mating systems and reproductive behavior and ecology of the Hawaiian montane wet forest. He has taught January terms on the natural history of Hawaii and the natural history of the desert southwest.

Also on Saturday, youngsters 6 to 12 years of age are invited to make gourd birdhouses at the refuge visitor center. Sandra Haynes, Grayson County Master Gardener, will lead the activity as part of the new Second Saturday for Youth. The youth program will meet from 10 a.m. until noon, with advance registration required due to limited space. Call 903-786-2826 to register. Children are encouraged to dress for the weather as there may be outdoor activities, as well.

Second Saturday nature programs are free and open to the public. For more information and directions, visit www.friendsofhagerman.com or call the refuge at 903-786-2826.

Art student benefit

The "Gift of the Heart" exhibit and silent auction is set for this Saturday at the 416 West Gallery in downtown Denison. Hosting the fundraiser, which runs from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., is Barbara Elam. Proceeds will fund the awards for the year-end Grayson County College Visual Arts student exhibition and art supplies for students in need.

"Gift of the Heart" features one-of-a-kind artwork with a Valentine theme, crafted and donated by GCC art students and area artists. Bidding for the silent auction items will begin at $10, and bidding will end at 8:30 p.m.

The exhibition, reception and auction is free and open to the public. For additional information, call Steve O. Black, chairman of the GCC Arts Department, at 903-463-8662.

Trout derby on Saturday

Denison Parks and Recreation's annual Youth Trout Derby is scheduled for Feb. 13 at Waterloo Lake-Pond. Fishing will be from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and lunch will be provided.

The contest is open to boys and girls ages 16 and younger. State and local fishing laws apply. The cost to compete is $5, and the first 50 paid participants will receive a cap. In addition to the trout derby will be a casting contest, prizes, food and drinks. Awards will be given for largest, smallest, and heaviest stringer (five fish) of fish. There will also be prizes awarded to the first five tagged and/or golden trout caught during the derby.

During the derby, 70 paid participants will be allowed around the pond at one time due to safety concerns.

Register at the City of Denison Parks and Recreation office, 531 W. Chestnut, or call 903-463-5116.

Calf scramble winners

FORT WORTH -- Christopher Holliday of Sherman, Turner Coulson of Collinsville, and Blair Keeton of S&S High School were among winners in the Feb. 4 calf scramble at the Fort Worth Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Holliday is the son of C.J. Cantrell and Rebecca Clark, Turner is the son of Sandy and Glenda Coulson, and Keeton is the son of Dana Wilson.

At each of the 30 stock show rodeo performances, 16 individual students compete to try and catch and halter one of eight calves with hopes of winning a $500 purchase certificate. That certificate will help buy a registered beef or dairy heifer for a yearlong 4-H or FFA project. Winners must care for their animals throughout the year and return for the 2011 Stock Show to exhibit it in the Junior Heifer Show. Those who do the best job will be in line for scholarship funds when they enter college. Last year, scholarship grants were made to 70 young people.

All entries receive a special T-shirt with their contestant number. Participants who fail to catch a calf receive a certificate for a pair of boots.
