Grayson County College Fall Concert Series begins Friday
Grayson County College Fall Concert Series begins Friday, Nov. 20. Students enrolled in the college's music program will perform in venues at the college and in the community.
"GCC students are presenting seven concerts this semester," said James Dering, music professor and director of GCC's music program. "All concerts are free and open to the public."
The GCC Guitar Ensemble opens the series on Nov. 20. The ensemble features several guitars and one bass. In addition, guitar students of Dr. David Tercero, adjunct professor of music (guitar and bass), will perform. The concert begins at 7 p.m. in the Irma Blackburn Lecture Center in GCC's Health Sciences Building on the college's Main Campus.
On Nov. 23, the voice students of Amye Derix, adjunct professor of music (voice), present a variety of pieces. The recital begins at 7 p.m. in Room 113 of the Success Center, located on GCC's Main Campus.
The GCC Jazz Combo ventures to the Boiler Room coffee shop in Sherman, on Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. Directed by Dering, the combo features a vocalist, four saxes and student musicians playing the piano, bass, drums, and guitar. The Boiler Room is located at 404 W. Lamar in the old Sherman Steam Laundry building.
The GCC Singers presents its choir concert, "Christmas and More," at 7 p.m. on Nov. 30 in Room 113 of the college's Success Center. Also directed by Dering, the choir performs a collection of songs that also includes holiday pieces.
On Dec. 2, classical piano students offer their recital at 7 p.m. in Room 113 of GCC's Success Center. They are the students of Tatiana Bays, adjunct professor of music (classical piano), who also will perform.
The GCC Chamber Band Concert takes place Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. in the college's Irma Blackburn Lecture Center. The band is directed by Jim Whitfill, adjunct professor of music (woodwinds, brass and percussion). The performance also includes recital pieces by Whitfill's private students.
Grayson's Fall Concert Series concludes Dec. 7 when Dering's jazz piano students return to the Boiler Room to perform at 7 p.m. They are accompanied by bass and drums. Dering plans to perform as well.
