Holiday concert

The Red River Valley Chorus, directed by Melody Holmes, will perform its "Holiday Harmony" concert at 7 p.m. this Saturday at Truth Tabernacle Church in Denison. The concert is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted and appreciated.

Adding to the performance by the chorus will be the following guests: Anna Clarkson, vocalist, and Brian Ladd, instrumental vocalist; Secret Blend; Whimsey Quartets; the Texoma Chordringers; the Out of Shape Notes; TQ; the Sweet Adeline chorus from Allen; and the Note-ably North Texas Chorus. Making its debut to the annual performance will be the Converse Quartet.

Another group of guests who will be singing several songs with the Red River Valley Chorus are the Holiday Stars. For six weeks, women from the Texoma area have been rehearsing with the chorus and learning the many facets of barbershop music. The women, called the Holiday Stars, will be joining the chorus for a full on-stage performance experience.

In addition to the music, attendees will be able to bid on silent auction items and a handmade quilt, "Snowmen on Parade."

Bake sale

COLBERT, Okla. -- The Lighthouse Church of Colbert is holding its annual bake sale this Friday in front of the Pizza Shack in Colbert.

In case of rain, the sale will be held inside the church at 130 Somers.

Mozingo honored

Russell Mozingo, a Civil Air Patrol cadet in Texoma Composite Squadron TX242 recently earned the Billy Mitchell Award. The official ceremony was held Aug. 24 at Grayson County College where Grayson County Judge Drue Bynum, a West Point graduate and recipient of the US Army's Meritorious Service Medal, presented the award.

The Mitchell Award honors the late Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell, an aviation pioneer, advocate, and supporter of an independent Air Force for America. Less than 15 percent of cadets nationwide receive this award. Earning this award marks the end of the enlisted phase of the cadet program and the beginning of the officer phase. Cadets earning the Mitchell Award receive the grade of cadet second lieutenant.

To earn this award, Mozingo passed a comprehensive, 100-question examination covering leadership theory and aerospace topics, as well as physical fitness tests, and a board of review.

Mozingo has served as the cadet commander for the squadron for the past 15 months. He is a home schooled, high school senior from Howe, who plans to pursue an engineering degree upon his graduation in May of 2010. He has been accepted to Texas A&M University's Dwight Look College of Engineering, Colorado School of Mines, and Louisiana Tech University.

Book signing

BONHAM -- A book signing by Ector native Robert Weddle will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Creative Arts Center in Bonham. Weddle is the recent recipient of the H,. G. Dulaney Public Service Award from the Friends of Sam Rayburn.

Featured will be Weddle's books-- The Wrecking of La Salle's Ship Aimable, The Trial of Claude Aigron, and After the Massacre. Also featured will be Dr. James Riddlesperger Jr. and Dr. Anthony Champagne with their book -- The Austin/Boston Connection.

Senior center events

VAN ALSTYNE -- Fall is full of activities at the Van Alstyne Senior Center.

The group recently traveled to Choctaw Bingo, and another like trip is planned after the first of the year.

There were 33 in attendance for the center's Veterans' Day lunch.

Attendees are encouraged to take part in the "chair-fit" classes at 8:30 a.m. every Thursday.

Next week's activities will be as follows: Monday, Nov. 23, 11:30 a.m. lunch; Tuesday, Nov. 24, Thanksgiving meal at 11:30 a.m., and potluck dinner at 6 p.m; Wednesday, Nov. 25, foot care from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., and lunch at 11:30 a.m.; and the center will be closed Nov. 26 and Nov. 27.

As a treat for the ladies, there will be a "girls only" sleep over on Friday, Nov. 27, starting at 6 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wearing their pajamas, and there will be games, old movies, snacks, prizes and breakfast.

November birthdays will be celebrated on Nov. 30, followed by decorating the center for Christmas.

Museum meeting

The Red River Historical Museum in Sherman recently held its annual Members-Only Open House at which time the Volunteer of the Year for 2009 was awarded.

Earning the award was Gregg Loyd, a member of the museum's board of directors. He was given the honor for his outstanding work coordinating the August Golf Scramble. The scramble teamed museum supporters with the Sherman Firefighters Association in order to raise funds for an elevator at the museum. Loyd is the Sherman Fire Department training officer.

The slate of officers for 2010 was presented and accepted by members present. They are: William W. Richardson, president; Bea Herod Harmon, vice president; and Dorothy McKee, secretary/treasurer. The will assume their new positions in January.
