Grayson County not being good stewards of former air base

I grew up in Sherman during the '60s and '70s. During those years Perrin Field was an active Air Force base. I was able to go there many times and enjoy things on the base.

Since it was given to Grayson County the condition of many remaining buildings there is a disgrace. The old officers club is overgrown with trees and has not been taken care of at all. The old hospital building set empty with many windows boarded up. The cafeteria is empty and trees are starting to take over. The old base housing area is quite a shame. Many houses there are run down as well as the carport units. Quite a few are honestly an eyesore.

Many of the roads in the base are full of pot holes and in need of repaving. It really disgusts me to see things in this condition after the U.S. Government gave this base to Grayson County. There has been so much talk about a new County Jail being built. Why has the base not been considered? The land is already owned by the county, the water and sewer lines are already there and it is very close to major highways. Maybe if this were to happen, the county could clean up the area and have their new jail.

Sounds like a win-win to me.

I am surprised the college (GCC) has not been able to utilize the barracks and such. If they were used by someone there should be revenue and support to maintain. I guess they would not be suitable for minor jail prisoners.

Just wondering

That is what happens : 2/10/2010
When the federal government gives something away, for free (yeah sure) the recievers of the gift want the federl government to give them a grant to maintain the gift. Folks, we are the government and the politicians spend your money like water. They lie to you because they think you are stupid. Democrats or Republicans have us snowed, lets take a snow plow and run the lieing, cheating, thieving politicans out of office.

FED $$$ are available : 2/8/2010
Fed. dollars are today being used for runway and taxi improvements. A few bucks could be used to keep things maintained but it is up to the Airport management to ask for those requirements. My bet is that in 25 years from today that this airport will have more operations than Love Field and major airlines will be here!

If you would do you homework instead of making assumptions you would realize how much this airport means to Grayson County in terms of revenue.

Dear Joe, Grayson County only has 120,000 people in it. It really has no use for an airport of this size nor does it have the tax base to support it. It really has no reason to support the Town Center either but it happens to be on a major intersection in North Texas.

Good Question : 2/6/2010
Because our beloved county judge wants to save the property and bring in new business... like a helicopter company or maybe a flight controler school... oh yea.. that didn't go very well did it...

sigh....

I wouldn't mind volunteering some time to clean up or repair some of the old buildings out on the base if people were interested in helping. This base is an important piece of history to our area and should be preserved as much as possible.
