Don't forget what a school district's mission really is

I have been reading the comments regarding the incoming head football coach and athletic director at Sherman High School, and now I can see where Bruce Springsteen got the inspiration to write the song "Glory Days."

Some take shots at former head coach Drew Young, and that's okay, because that's the way it is in such a public position, not everyone is going to agree with how things are done. Things people can't say about Coach Young are that he didn't care or he couldn't coach. He does care a lot about students who are involved in athletics. Coach Young shows up for games every time a team plays, even making road trips when possible. After being a sports editor for more than 10 years, I can tell you that this is something more than a few athletic directors don't do.

He was also a good coach. After all that turmoil surrounding his hiring, Young and the coaching staff took the 2004 Bearcats to the 4A Division I semifinal game, and that was a team that had a collection of players who had absolutely no business even making the playoffs. But that team was so much better than the sum of its parts. I think Sherman is about like any other school district in Texas, sometimes a team can catch lightning in a bottle and compete for a state championship. It's not something every Sherman high school sports team is going to do every year.

Through his tenure, Young never forgot what his true mission was -- to help educate young people and prepare them for the rest of their lives. And that's something a school district cannot compromise in order to win a trophy or two.

The true measure of how a school district does isn't found in the number of state championships, but I think it is found in the number of National Merit Scholars the district puts out, and the amount of scholarship money a graduating class collects. Sherman had three National Merit finalists and the class of 2009 earned about $3.5 million worth of scholarships.

What I don't want to see is some guy sitting at the bar retelling the story about how he scored three touchdowns against Polk High. High school should be part of life's rich pageant, not the glory days.

Athletics are a wonderful part of the educational process. As someone who went to college to play football, I can tell you without athletics I would not have gone to college. The things I learned in athletics kept me in college, helped me get my degree, and have been a great aid throughout my adult life.

I hope I keep my view of athletics in proper perspective especially since I am a parent of a Sherman High girls soccer player. I like the games. I umpire high school baseball and am a C-3 rugby referee. I like to be involved, and I like to watch the young people be successful in a competitive situation.

I try to remember that athletics are part of the educational process, and whether teams win or lose, it doesn't really matter in the big picture.

What does matter is what the players learn about themselves and can they apply the lessons they learn through athletics to real-world situations so they can become successful adults.

That's the kind of image I want my school district to project when they hire Young's replacement.

I don't understand the mentality of relying on a coach or teacher to get your child into college. I also don't understand holding an athletic director of a high school responsible for resparking little league athletics in the community. Instead of griping about what someone doesn't do, why don't you get up, do something for your community and local schools and most importantly do whatever you can do to help your child get into college....especially when you are asking for a free hand-out on tuition, housing, books, etc. I am not a school employee, but I have volunteered, yes, without pay, at my children's schools and I cannot imagine condemning the people we pay pennies to for what they have to put up with. Everyone should try it for a week or so and I bet the anonymous griping stops.

good grief

Scholarships : 7/17/2009
This may have changed since I played college football but last I heard Institutions of Higher Learning that I attended gave athletic scholarships based on evaluations of the players game tapes vs quality opponents, transcripts, family background, and ACT/SAT scores.Believe it or not Sherman's counselors, coaches, and teachers spend a lot of time preparing and providing this information but here's a news flash..... They don't give scholarships the Colleges and Universities do!

Responsibility : 7/1/2009
I am thrilled that people are acknowledging that the future, whether it be sports-related or not, is more important than a winning season when it comes to a student. However, these students should be showing initiative to complete their own scholarships, and obtain their own film, and letters of reference to pursue the future of their choice. There are some amazing teachers who go above and beyond to assist students, but it isn't their responsibility to make sure a child goes to college, it is the student's, and to an extent, that student's parents. Teachers and administrators are preparing students as well as possible considering the current testing guidelines and curriculum issues. All I am saying is that these students who are old enough to venture out into the world, should be making their own way and preparing their own future, not waiting for teachers, coaches, and principals to make the way for them. Parents, if you feel certain items are important for your student's future, make sure you teach your child to save trophies, records, newspaper articles, and other material that would serve as recommendation for their future.

Some good, some bad : 7/1/2009
Reading the comments and the story I have to agree with some of both sides. I have had 2 kids go through the Sherman High & 2 kids still in it. Girls and boys, so I have seen all sides of what Young has done here. He did go to the other games and support the kids both boys & girls, and on a personal level I thought he was a nice guy. However it is right that we have not done a good enough job helping those kids that might not go to college in finding scholarships. By the way Todd the kids apply for ALL of those on their own, there is not much help from the school on getting those scholarships. Where Young and his staff are not helping the kids is in the area of assisting them in their college search, getting them film to send out to schools, and making contact with coaches to inform them of players. I think that is part of their job, mold them and help them to get to the next level, both mentally and physically, if that is not the intent of the next Coach and A.D. then we need to find someone who does have that passion. Every coach, every teacher, every counselor, every principle should be working to get each child to the next level, college, and have them as prepared as possible to be successful at that level, academically and athletically.

If it was truly like a vote casting system Mr. Opinion, then Mr. Clifton, Mr. Hutchinson and others wouldn't have to use their names when giving opinions and could hide behind them as you and most of the other people on here do or use pseudonyms! Help our kids, I doubt we're going to lose Coach McCullough anytime soon, as he's a born and bred Sherman Bearcat who has brought this program to new heights. Only an extreme offer might get his attention. Football has gone south? THEY'RE ONLY IN THE SECOND YEAR OF HAVING YOUTH FOOTBALL BACK IN SHERMAN! Is that Young's fault?

LAUGHING OUT LOUD

New Coach : 6/29/2009
While some think Drew Young was good for Sherman, I totally disagree. Drew Young never spent time with helping the community build little league programs. Actually football and baseball have declined over the past 5 years. Only our basketball coach has spent any time actually help developing our youth programs. Denison kicks our tail at football because their entire program starts when the kids are young. Denison beat our football program at every level this year. Secondly did Drew Young or any of his other coaches try to help our athletes get scholarships? No, it's almost always up to the parents to do this, not our coaches. Yes, the great athletes, James, Peterson, Clark will get noticed and be given scholarships, however when did any of the coaching staff ever pick up the phone to get players into colleges. Coach McCullough is the only coach at the school that actually works for our children. Has the baseball coaches gotten anyone a scholarship in the last 5 years? Coach McCullough should be the new Athletic Director, however I feel he will never be given the opportunity. It will be a real shame when we lose our only winning Coach.

Posting on here is no different than when I cast a vote. Votes are done in the privacy of a booth but obviously make a difference. My comments have clearly resonated with you on some level - I can only hope they do the same with the Public Employees of the SISD. Thanks for supporting this forum - it keeps folks interested in your profession.

If that's the case : 6/25/2009
If you're just stating opinion and not "complaining", griping or whatever you want to call it Mr./Ms. Owasso Opinion, then why don't you or 90 percent of the people on here put your name on the bottom of your posts? You're the same people that come up to Drew Young after a game and say he did a good job! I know it, b/c I have to listen to it on a daily basis! So, until you guys put your real names on here like Todd, myself and the rest of us who are "dying", then what you are doing can be constituted as belly aching.

Mission vs. Statement : 6/25/2009
Drew Young should be thanked for his many years of service and his good example. At the same time - he is/was a public employee and folks have the right to expect better Coaching (Tipps, Outlaw) and can voice their thoughts. Voicing opinions is not "complaining" - it is the way things get better as a small part of the process. Sherman should be strive to be exemplary in all aspects and have not been recently in Football. It should never be a Newspaper's role to morph into a PR Machine for those they feel like defending while tearing down the very readers that keep a dying media in business.

Finally, someone who has stated WHAT IS and should be most important in the hiring of the new coach and what Drew Young stood for at SHS. Winning at all cost is definitely not the answer and will never give these kids any life lessons or skills.
