Common sense and quick thinking save the day

Common sense is something we all share, but not something we all put into practice. And when we see common sense used correctly, it generally translates into what scientists call an Ah-Ha moment.

I was onboard an American Airlines flight hurtling across the Texas sky toward Lubbock early Saturday morning when a pregnant woman across the aisle started to have trouble breathing. It was if she couldn't take a breath. Her husband was trying his best, getting her a bag to breathe into, then getting a flight attendant's attention. She tried to help her passenger by giving her water, and then the attendant went back to the cabin phone and asked if there was a doctor or other medical professional on board.

There wasn't.

But who we did have on board was another flight attendant. She calmly walked back to this woman's seat with a cold compress of some kind, put it behind the woman's neck, and it seemed to do the trick. Then the flight attendant took the passenger to the front of the plane, and had her sit in an open seat. We completed the rest of the trip uneventfully, which is how all flights should be completed.

Flight attendants are on the front lines with the flying public. They catch a lot of grief because there is always a feeling of dissatisfaction with air travel. They also get to fly more while being paid less because airlines always work to turn a profit.

Yet, they are still ready to help at a moment's notice, because they are trained to respond to situations that may be extremely difficult.

I don't know who our flight attendants were, but here's a thank you for rising above the negatives of the profession, and showing one plane load of passengers bound for Lubbock what common sense when applied correctly can accomplish.
