Drumroll please ...
Unlike their rivals to the immediate north, who are slowly but surely
persuading folks to play them, Sherman faced little drama in filling
out its 2010 football schedule.
Coach Gary Kinne came back from a District 13-4A meeting on Tuesday
with his league schedule set, and by Wednesday afternoon it was all
over. All four non-district foes were in place, and even a scrimmage
opponent was installed for the week before the regular season.
The Bearcats, who finished 8-3 a year ago and were District 9-4A
runners-up, will open the 2010 season with four non-district opponents
because of the seven-team setup in the new District 13-4A. They’ll
begin on the road with non-district games at The Colony and Little Elm,
then will host Highland Park and Lake Dallas at Bearcat Stadium, the
latter for homecoming.
Little Elm and Lake Dallas are carryovers from last season, with
Sherman beating the Lobos and losing to the Falcons. The Bearcats last
played The Colony in 1997, winning 28-21, and are 3-1 all-time against
the Cougars.
Highland Park is the marquee matchup of the non-district schedule. The
Scots are an ancient rival whose history with Sherman goes back to
1931, but this’ll be their first meeting since 1999, a game narrowly
won by the Scots, 16-14.
In district play, the Cats will reacquaint themselves with Greenville
and Sulphur Springs, who were in with Sherman and Denison back in
2002-03. They’ve played Mount Pleasant recently, splitting non-district
games in 2004-05. The Cats have never played Royse City, which joined
Class 4A in 2008 for the first time.
Texarkana is the wrinkle in the schedule. The Bearcats have faced Texas
High only once before, in 1951, a district road game the Bearcats lost,
33-0, during a 1-9 season. That was back when the University
Interscholastic League realigned annually, a practice that stopped in
the mid-50s.
The Bearcats bite the travel bullet this fall by traveling to Mount
Pleasant, Texarkana and Denison, but those three games will all be at
Bearcat Stadium in 2011.
Yes, that is correct, the Battle of the Ax will be in Week 8, marking
the first time since 1995 that Sherman and Denison won’t end the
regular season with a game against each other. The Bearcats draw a bye
the following week before taking on Greenville, which means they’ll
have two weeks to either bask in a glorious win, or stew over a loss.
If the latter happens, the week off may do some good: Four of the last
five times Sherman entered the playoffs after a Week 10 loss to
Denison, it’s gone on to lose the bi-district game.
The Cats will travel to Forney on Aug. 20 for a preseason scrimmage
that is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. All regular-season games are
scheduled for the customary 7:30 kickoff, but Kinne said that could
change. For instance, Little Elm last year opted to move all its home
games to a 7 p.m. start.
The 2010 varsity football schedule for the Bearcats:
Friday, Aug. 20 at Forney (scrimmage)
Friday, Aug. 27 at The Colony
Friday, Sept. 3 at Little Elm
Friday, Sept. 10 Highland Park

No week 10 Battle of the Axe? Boo!
(And Coach White is doing just fine)
Whatever
Scheduling : 2/5/2010
Denison lost a ton of players from their great two year run. Really don't understand why it's so difficult getting schools to play them these next two years. Sherman is no pushover so wonder why they were able to fill their schedule with schools close by?

Losses to The Colony, HP, SS, & Texarkana.
