Game Recap — Sherman at Greenville

Friday’s game was certainly quick — a running clock in the second half ended the game right around 10 p.m. — but it was certainly not painless.

Greenville made Sherman’s defense battle all night and the Lions, in the throes of what is now a 20-game losing streak, held their own in terms of field position. And at least one Bearcat got tweaked in the first half — not what the coaching staff wanted to see with the playoffs coming up.

Fortunately for the Bearcats, it didn’t matter where on the field they started. Sherman’s four scoring drives of the first half all went for 70 or more yards, with Gus Daniel ending each of them with touchdown passes — three to J.T. Luper and one to Walter Mitchell.

Kolby Milner’s coming-out party added some spice to a pretty routine mismatch. Milner broke a 25-yard gain on his very first carry for Sherman and finished with 60 yards, and Milner returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown to make it 35-0 at halftime.

As I said in my preview story this week, Sherman’s defense is a big reason why the Bearcats had a chance to lift the golden ball at the end of Friday night’s game. The Bearcats have pick-sixes in five straight district games, and have recorded at least one defensive touchdown in all six.

It was good to see the reserves perform well in the second half to preserve the shutout. Sherman hasn’t had many chances this year to give second-teamers a lot of playing time, and they took advantage of this one, which will help in a new district in 2012 when a lot of these guys will be regulars.

So another district championship season is in the books, making 21 of them altogether in Sherman’s history. It feels a lot better now than it did five weeks ago, when three road losses in a four-game stretch had everyone down in the dumps. But that third loss, at Sulphur Springs, showed that the Bearcats were capable of making adjustments and getting themselves on firmer footing for the postseason. And here we are.
