Game Recap — Denison vs. Greenville

If I were King of the Forest, Not queen, not duke, not prince.
My regal robes of the forest, would be satin, not cotton, not chintz.
I’d command each thing, be it fish or fowl.
With a woof and a woof and a royal growl — woof.

As I’d click my heel, all the trees would kneel.
And the mountains bow and the bulls kowtow.
And the sparrow would take wing — If I — If I — were King!

Each rabbit would show respect to me. The chipmunks genuflect to me.
Though my tail would lash, I would show compash
For every underling!

If I — If I — were King!
Just King!
Monarch of all I survey — Mo—na-a-a—a-arch of all I survey!

Um yeah.....about that. Better luck next season.

It was over when — R.J. Polk intercepted Jeffro Davis with 3:54 left in the game. Denison held a 28-17 lead and the Lions had reached the Denison 34 looking to make it a one-score game. But the junior came away with the turnover and allowed the Jackets to burn two-and-a-half minutes off the clock.

It was really over when — Richard McKinney recovered an onside kick with a little more than 30 seconds left. Greenville scored to cut the deficit to four and would have a chance to win until the senior fell on the loose ball at midfield.

Player of the Game — Denison quarterback Clifton Hines has had his struggles this season but came out of this one with two touchdowns passing and one rushing. He ran for 118 of his 158 yards in the second half and had 98 yards passing.

Play of the Game — Hines’ five-yard touchdown with 6:12 left in the third quarter. The reason it’s so big is it came three plays after a bogus penalty wiped a TD off the board (Quamie Bush went up between two defenders in the end zone and was called for pass interference). Denison then faced 1st and 25 at the Greenville 26 and if the Jackets had to settle for a field goal, it could have been a very different outcome. (It could have also been a different outcome because Greenville, down five, should have gone for two after its final TD to try and kick a field goal to force OT after the onside kick. The Lions didn’t and made the comeback attempt that much tougher).

The good — Denison had a season-high in yardage (410) that included 312 on the ground. The second-half defense was very good. The Jackets adjusted to Davis taking over at QB for Greenville and outside of a late TD held the Lions to only a field goal with the game in the balance and got both turnovers, plus a fourth-down stop, after half-time. The emergence of Quamie Bush. The sophomore came into the game with 16 catches for 141 yards. He had four grabs for 54 yards and his first two varsity touchdowns. He also had a 21-yard reverse (negated somewhat by a fumble on his second carry). Dre Butler against Greenville. The senior tailback has had two of his three best efforts against the Lions — this year he had a career-topping 106 yards on 13 carries, last year he had 94 yards on 17 carries. (Sandwiched between is 97 yards on 21 carries against Sherman).

The bad — This time the Jackets were able to overcome the slow start, but just barely. Greenville needed only three plays into the game to score (to be fair, it was a great play by Jaquentin Patt to get the 25-yard TD) and Denison had a fumble at the goal line that Greenville recovered and then drove 96 yards to take a 14-7 lead. A bad 14-point swing that should have been avoided. And it’s always bad when you get eliminated from the playoffs and that’s what happened to Denison with Royse City’s win over Mount Pleasant. Penalties. There were a lot of them — 17 for 151 yards by Denison and 11 for 105 by Greenville.

District dish — In addition to Denison’s victory over Greenville, Texas High defeated Sulphur Springs, 48-38, and Royse City defeated Mount Pleasant, 14-9.
The victory by Royse City eliminated Denison and Mount Pleasant from playoff contention and clinched the district’s final postseason berth.
The regular season closes with Denison playing at Mount Pleasant, Sherman at Greenville and Royse City at Sulphur Springs. Texas High has the bye. While Royse City is locked into fourth place and the Division II second seed, Sherman, Sulphur Springs and Texas High can all earn a share of the 13-4A title. Sulphur Springs has already locked up the top seed in Division II and Sherman can do the same in Division I with a victory over Greenville.

Stinging stats of the week — The victory snapped Denison’s five-game losing streak...The 28 points was the most scored in a district contest by the Jackets and second-highest total of the season...Hayden Chapman had his first carries since the second game of the season and first touchdown since the season opener....How rare was the penalty outburst? The Jackets had committed only 20 for 150 yards in the previous three games combined...Polk had an interception for the second game in a row...Both teams had more than 20 first downs (Denison’s 23 to Greenville’s 22)...Clay Stubblefield tied Bush for the lead in receptions with four...It was the first time in four games that Dalton Hestand did not kick a field goal...Greenville suffered its 19th straight loss and is in danger of a second straight 0-10 season. By comparison, Denison has never had an 0-10 season and only one winless year since 1919 (Congrats if you recalled the 0-9-1 campaign of 1971).

Young Players : 11/6/2011
Coach Brown always said that you could count on a loss for every sophomore you start. We had many. Now we are out of excuses for 2012.

NO KIDDING!!! you would think by the way the announcers sounded on the radio that Denison had won district. Just wait till next year, if Denison is put in the Denton/wichita district. By the way Coach White, how many years, can you say you have a young team? Aren't you playing kids the same age?

tired of excuses

It's A Miracle : 11/2/2011
Funny how everything came together against that powerhouse Grenville Lion team. Quicker releases, better recievers, better defense. Thank God for all that or you might not have beaten an 0 and 9 team.

One More to Go : 11/2/2011
The play calling seemed to be a little better this game as we mixed it up a little more. Clifton Hines looked more in command at QB. He's releasing the ball a little quicker and running stronger. The receivers are coming along. The defense looks really good when they are interested in playing. We had better not come out FLAT again, or there will be another L for us against Mount Pleasant. Come on Jackets-- finish strong! You have to want it. We'll be better next year. Here is to an improved off-season, competitive 7 on 7, a new OC, and our staff learning more positive, inspired coach speak. Let's get some fire built under them. Make them BELIEVE, even if you don't.
