Meet the Enemy -- Richardson Pearce

Last year Richardson Pearce knocked Sherman out of the playoffs in the first round. Is there a chance the Mustangs could take down the team to the north?

Pearce has an offense that could do the job but defensively it might only lead to a shootout. The Mustangs went 6-4 and finished fourth in District 10-4A. The victories are over Sachse, Richardson, R.L. Turner, Royse City, Rockwall and Greenville. The losses are all to playoff teams -- Denton Ryan, Highland Park, Rockwall-Heath and Newman Smith.

Among all Class 4A teams, Denison was sixth in scoring at a shade over 45 points per game. One of the teams in front of them was Richardson Pearce.

The Mustangs have scored fewer than 36 points just once and allowed at least 36 points four times. In three losses, Pearce gave up 64, 51 and 70 points. In their most recent game, a 70-56 loss to Newman Smith, the Mustangs allowed 458 rushing yards and 721 total yards.

Caleb Lewis has completed 173-of-252 passes for 2,618 yards and 26 touchdowns with 14 interceptions, although he didn't play in the final game. It didn't matter as back-up Mac Morse stepped in to complete 45-of-68 passes for 634 yards and four touchdowns. The yardage is the single-game state-record and sixth-best in the history of high school football. The back-up did that. And now he goes to bench with Lewis expected back in the lineup.

Blake Jumonville is the team's top receiver at 1,245 yards and seven touchdowns on 64 catches but Jake Allen and Josh Gold have at least 52 catches, 740 yards and seven touchdowns apiece. Jumonville had 386 yards and 18 catches last week -- his yardage was also a single-game state record.

The team's leading rusher is Corey Coleman, who has 681 yards and seven touchdowns on 87 carries while Gold has 486 yards and 12 touchdowns on 76 yards.

Senior kicker Michael Hunnicutt, who has six field goals, is ranked by Rivals.com as the 15th best kicker in the country for the class of 2010. Expect touchbacks. Lots of touchbacks.
