Boys basketball roundup: Bearcats zero in on district crown HERALD DEMOCRAT

McKINNEY — Cameron Clark scored 30 points, and Sherman moved to within one more game of clinching an outright District 9-4A championship on Friday night with a 62-56 victory over McKinney High.

The Bearcats (19-11, 11-0) would sew up the district title — their fourth in the last five seasons — and a No. 1 seed in the playoffs with a win on Tuesday night at home against Denison.

Trey Jones added 10 points for the Bearcats, who kept the host Lions at arm’s length after taking a 29-25 halftime lead.

Ryan Knox led McKinney (7-21, 2-9)  with 15 points, followed by Kaleb Kite with a dozen.

Following Tuesday’s game with the Yellow Jackets, the Bearcats close out the regular season by hosting Frisco High next Friday and traveling to McKinney North a week from next Tuesday.

District 9-3A
Whitesboro 66, Celina 52

WHITESBORO — Austin Cleland scored 20 points as Whitesboro defeated Celina.

Matt Hobbs added 15 points and Matt Miller chipped in 21 points for Whitesboro (17-12, 2-5).

District 10-3A
Commerce 60, Bonham 57

BONHAM — T. J. King had 20 points for Bonham but Commerce (12-16, 4-3) rallied in the fourth quarter for the win.

Hunter Herriage added eight points for Bonham (7-19, 1-6) while Daley Biggers, Blaze Blain and Daine Dunlap chipped in seven each.

District 11-2A
Leonard 55, Bells 44 (OT)

BELLS — Matt Williams made a free throw to force overtime and James Arnold scored five of his 12 points in the extra frame as Leonard defeated Bells to maintain its spot in third place.

Aaron Moreland scored 18 points to lead Leonard (17-11, 8-3) while Williams and Brad Moulder chipped in 10 points apiece.

Derek Elk led Bells (17-10, 6-5) with 19 points while Nate Neal added 11 points.

No. 9 Melissa 86, Howe 39
HOWE — Ryan Ragon scored 19 points as Melissa defeated Howe to clinch a playoff spot.

Zach Helmberger added 18 points while Mason Hart and Ian Hatfield each scored 10 points for Melissa (26-4, 11-0), which can clinch the district title with a victory against Honey Grove on Wednesday night.

Alex Torres had nine points while Matt Dowlen scored seven points for Howe (16-11, 4-7).

Whitewright 65, Gunter 31
WHITEWRIGHT — Tyrone Swoopes had 20 points, six rebounds and five steals while Hamilton Luper added 14 points, 10 rebounds and five steals as Whitewright clinched a playoff spot.

Gerren Ballard finished with 11 points and seven rebounds while Jordan Williams had nine points and five assists for Whitewright (21-8, 9-2), which plays at Leonard on Tuesday.

Richard Young scored 13 points while Nick Yansky finished with eight points for Gunter (7-19, 3-8).

Honey Grove 45, Tom Bean 38
HONEY GROVE — Darius Brown scored 17 points as Honey Grove defeated Tom Bean.

Dillon Baugh chipped in 15 points for Honey Grove.

Jake Trentman scored 20 points and Matt Cooper had 10 points for Tom Bean (3-23, 1-10), which hosts Bells on Tuesday.

Trenton 43, Wolfe City 36

WOLFE CITY — Derek Meyer scored 15 points as Trenton defeated Wolfe City.

Alex Meyer added nine points for Trenton (16-10, 8-2), which can clinch a playoff spot at home against Sam Rayburn on Tuesday night.

Kory Wilkinson scored 11 points while Tyler Deary added nine points for Wolfe City (13-11, 5-4).

Sam Rayburn 70, Celeste 28
CELESTE — Drew Davis scored 34 points as Sam Rayburn defeated Celeste.

Cole Caplinger added 16 points while Scott Berni and Brent Smith chipped in seven points apiece for Sam Rayburn, which plays at Trenton on Tuesday night.
